Thousands of people bring nets to the river to compete in catching fish.

TPO - Following the signal drum from the organizers of the Giang River fishing competition, the teams, carrying their fishing gear, jumped into the river to compete. Each team tried to catch as many fish as possible to win the competition.

On April 14th, Mon Son commune (Con Cuong district, Nghe An province ) organized a fishing competition on the Giang River. This is one of the activities within the framework of the 2024 Mon Son - Luc Da Festival, which is held annually.

Reportedly, this is the second year that Mon Son commune has organized the fishing competition on the Giang River with the aim of creating a lively and joyful atmosphere, connecting the spirit of solidarity among villages and hamlets; and helping people to be aware of protecting aquatic resources through fishing methods that cause less harm to the natural environment.

This year's competition features 12 teams with 84 members from 12 villages in Mon Son commune. In addition to male members, the teams also include female members for support. According to the competition organizers, participants in the fishing festival are only allowed to use traditional fishing gear such as: cast nets, scoops, baskets, and nets. Teams are provided with small boats and diving goggles for fishing.

The fishing competition took place on the Giang River, right at the foot of the Pha Lai dam (Mon Son commune). Teams were allowed to fish along a nearly 1km stretch of the river. Previously, this section of the river had been closed to all forms of fishing to conserve aquatic resources. (Photo: DTSG).

Following the signal drumbeat, the competing teams, carrying their fishing gear, jumped into the river to compete in catching fish. The competition consists of two parts. In the first part, 12 teams will compete in catching fish. The team that catches the most fish, and the largest fish, will win. After the teams finish their competition, the local people are allowed to bring their nets, traps, and other fishing gear down to the Giang River to catch fish.

Besides the competing teams, thousands of locals lined the banks watching the competition and waiting for their turn to go down into the river and participate in catching fish.

The competing teams used various methods to catch fish, such as standing on boats and casting nets, swimming, diving in the river to cast nets, and searching for fish.

When the fish were caught, those in the water and on the shore cheered and celebrated.

The competition was lively and attracted many participants.

After spending many hours diving and fishing in the river, the competing teams all caught very large fish.

After more than two hours of fishing, the teams brought their catch back to the organizing committee area for weighing. The Bac Son team won first place with over 17 kg of fish. The Tan Son and Lang Yen teams, catching 14-15 kg each, won second and third place respectively. After the competition, the teams will divide the fish among their members for food.

After the competition ended, the locals were free to go down to the river to catch fish using fishing gear such as seines, nets, and traps.
