Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee has just issued an official dispatch requesting relevant departments and branches to simultaneously manage and control sturgeon import activities in the area.

Accordingly, the Provincial People's Committee assigned the Department of Industry and Trade to direct the Market Management Department to strengthen market inspection and control, and handle cases of illegal trading and transportation of sturgeon of unknown origin in the domestic market.

The Regional Customs Branch VII shall preside over and coordinate with Lao Cai Animal Quarantine Station and relevant agencies to strictly control the import of sturgeon according to regulations, ensuring its origin and being on the List of products permitted for business in Vietnam.

The provincial police and the provincial military command direct and arrange forces to coordinate with market management agencies to increase patrols and control the area, promptly detect, prevent and strictly handle acts of transporting smuggled sturgeon through trails and border openings and acts of trading and consuming sturgeon of unknown origin, origin and smuggling.

Lao Cai provincial government also assigned the Department of Agriculture and Environment to coordinate with relevant departments and branches to advise the provincial People's Committee on management measures, support sturgeon farming facilities to apply advanced farming technology, and develop production projects according to the chain. Thereby, promoting the sustainable development of the domestic sturgeon farming industry in the province.

People's Committees of border communes and wards must coordinate with functional forces to inspect and monitor trails and openings; at the same time, step up propaganda so that people do not assist in the trading and transportation of smuggled sturgeon.

Along with that, promote propaganda to raise awareness for people not to participate in or assist in buying, selling, and transporting smuggled sturgeon.

As VietNamNet reported earlier, the Lao Cai Coldwater Fish Association has sent a petition to relevant ministries and agencies, reflecting on the massive import of sturgeon at cheap prices that is pushing farmers into losses and facing the risk of bankruptcy.

The organization emphasized that sturgeon imported in large quantities mainly through the northern border gates, consumed fresh and at low prices, directly competes with domestic products, causing domestic fish prices to drop rapidly. Low prices are not enough to cover production costs, forcing many farming facilities to downsize or cease operations, leading to losses and bankruptcy; the coldwater fish industry is at risk of being wiped out.

In addition, imported sturgeon products are sold under the ambiguous label of "Lao Cai sturgeon", causing instability and reducing consumer confidence in domestic products.

Therefore, the Association recommends that authorities strictly control import activities, require clear proof of origin, and at the same time study the establishment of import floor prices to combat dumping.
