How are businesses transitioning to green to reduce carbon emissions?

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí12/02/2025

(Dan Tri Newspaper) - Many businesses say they have implemented green transformation early on to reduce costs and decrease carbon emissions into the environment.

By 2030, the transportation sector is projected to emit 90 million tons of CO2.

On the afternoon of February 12th, the Vietnam Logistics Business Association (VLA) organized a workshop on the topic of "Green Logistics - A Sustainable Destination."

In his opening remarks, Mr. Dao Trong Khoa, Chairman of VLA, stated that climate change is one of the biggest global challenges of the 21st century. In particular, the logistics industry is emitting a significant amount of carbon dioxide (CO2), estimated at 7-8%.

Therefore, similar to the requirements for other economic sectors, developing green logistics and reducing emissions is becoming a crucial component of any supply chain in the context of a geopolitically unstable world.

Along with that, there is a growing demand for "greening" to reduce emissions from countries around the globe, including Vietnam, as it fulfills its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, Mr. Khoa shared.

Representatives of the association stated that Vietnam's logistics sector currently relies heavily on road transport and has uneven development across different modes of transport. 75% of goods are still transported by road, while 12% are transported by sea and only 2% by rail.

According to the World Bank (WB), on average, transportation activities in Vietnam emit more than 50 million tons of CO2 annually, with road transport accounting for 85% of these emissions.

These emissions are projected to increase by an average of 6-7% per year, and Vietnam's greenhouse gas emissions are considered significantly higher than those of developed and developing countries worldwide. It is projected that CO2 emissions from the transportation sector will reach 90 million tons by 2030.

Besides significant emissions, Vietnam's logistics industry is also affected by increasingly stringent policies, regulations, and international integration requirements. New-generation trade agreements all require Vietnamese businesses to raise standards and reduce their carbon footprint in logistics operations to move towards sustainable supply chain development.

"Therefore, Vietnamese logistics businesses need to leverage their advantages, turning the urgent need for greening into a driving force, enhancing competitiveness, improving brand image, and aiming for more sustainable and comprehensive development," the VLA chairman emphasized.

What are businesses doing to reduce emissions?

According to Mr. Khoa, businesses must keep up with new global trends and standards, aiming for energy transition with energy-efficient vehicles, renewable energy, and green energy. At the same time, they also need to optimize operating costs, digitize operations, and improve efficiency and effectiveness in providing logistics services.

From the perspective of an air transport business, Mr. Do Xuan Quang, Vice Chairman of VLA and Deputy General Director of VietJet Aviation Joint Stock Company, emphasized that businesses need to focus on comprehensively managing their supply chain in a green direction. These activities include transportation management, warehousing, and logistics data, with the goal of minimizing transportation and delivery times.

Enhancing the reuse of products, packaging, materials, etc., to create a comprehensive green supply chain will help businesses improve production and operational efficiency, while building a green and sustainable ecosystem.

To be more specific, for the past 10 years, VietJet has been interested in green transformation and digital transformation. This has been demonstrated through actions such as selecting a new generation fleet of aircraft and using new energy sources (Sustainable Aviation Fuel - SAF), saving 20% on fuel compared to conventional methods.

SAF – a renewable and sustainably sourced fuel such as used cooking oil, agricultural by-products, wood biomass, municipal waste, etc. – this sustainable aviation fuel can help reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional fuels.

In addition, the company has digitized its entire process through a system of applications on smart devices and websites, minimizing paperwork in its operations.

From the perspective of a freight forwarding company, Ms. Pham Thi Tinh, Commercial Director of the Hanoi branch of Interlog International Logistics Joint Stock Company, stated that, as a link in the global supply chain, transportation businesses need to adapt, and a green transformation strategy needs to be prioritized.

In its green transformation model, the company focuses on three main pillars: firstly, employee awareness; secondly, energy transition; and thirdly, finding optimal solutions to reduce costs.

According to Ms. Tinh, since the end of 2022, Interlog has focused on internal training from leadership to staff. In addition, the company organizes thematic workshops and seminars to increase awareness of green transformation.

Following the trend, businesses are also accelerating the application of digital transformation to reduce paperwork in their operations.

Not only internally, but businesses also offer suggestions and solutions to help reduce carbon emissions for customers through advice on delivery routes and vehicles.
