Need fundamental solutions to handle chemical residues in agricultural products

Agricultural production has recently created jobs and increased income for Lam Dong people. However, the abuse of fertilizers and pesticides is seriously threatening environmental quality.

The potential risks from pesticide residues on agricultural products are becoming a matter of concern, not only for consumers but also for the environment and sustainable agricultural production. Improper use of pesticides is potentially reducing soil and water quality and affecting biodiversity. This not only leads to a decline in the reputation and quality of agricultural products but also causes loss of market, once shipments are found to exceed the maximum residue limit (MRL).

For example, the production of vegetables and flowers of all kinds is still fragmented and small-scale, and the quality control system and food hygiene and safety from production to consumption still have many shortcomings. The production process is not uniform among localities; climate change increases natural disasters and pests. Meanwhile, infrastructure is still weak; linkages along the production value chain are not sustainable; there is a lack of application of science and high technology in production, especially post-harvest technology...

As for fruit products, according to Dr. Dinh Van Phe - Western Highlands Agricultural and Forestry Science Institute (WASI), the current requirements for quality, food safety, and appearance of some types such as passion fruit, durian, and fresh avocado for export are very strict. Meanwhile, the current production scale is still small, mainly by households, causing difficulties in control. Especially in spontaneous growing areas, without ensuring soil conditions, irrigation, and water, affecting productivity and quality.

Dr. Dinh Van Phe added that due to climate change and the emergence of epidemics, people have used chemical pesticides without following the "4 rights" principle (right medicine, right dosage, right time and right way), becoming a serious problem in agricultural production today.

According to a survey of the professional sector, in farming activities, most people use excessive fertilizers to maximize crop yields. Especially in coffee, pepper, and fruit tree cultivation, many areas use fertilizers and pesticides 10-20% higher than necessary, seriously affecting the soil environment. "To have a fundamental solution to handle chemical residues in agricultural production, the professional sector and farmers need to strengthen reasonable land management. That is, the land must be tested for quality, not contaminated with heavy metals or toxic chemicals," said Dr. Dinh Van Phe.

At the same time, farmers need to rotate crops to avoid soil degradation; increase the use of composted organic fertilizers, do not use fresh fertilizers. Along with that, use clean irrigation water, not contaminated with chemicals or pathogenic microorganisms. Use safe fertilizers and pesticides, only use the types specified in the list, and follow the quarantine period. Prioritize the use of organic, biological fertilizers and biological pesticides. Keep a complete log of fertilizer and pesticide use.

According to Master Bui Khanh Tung - Vietnam Organic Agriculture Association, the Central Highlands provinces need to develop policies to encourage investment, development and more widespread use of biological pesticides. In particular, allocating funds for research and public-private partnership in the production of biological pesticides. “ Lam Dong province as well as the Central Highlands provinces need to further promote propaganda and training on good agricultural practices. Build links and cooperation between management agencies, businesses and farmers to develop healthy gardens, select pest-resistant varieties suitable for natural conditions and replicate production models in a circular, organic direction,” added Master Bui Khanh Tung.
