The sidewalk infrastructure and the road under repair need to be completed soon.

Recently, many roads and sidewalks in the city have been dug up to replace paving stones and upgrade urban infrastructure. However, the renovation process has dragged on for too long, disrupting people's lives and causing traffic safety hazards.

Road excavation for infrastructure projects such as water supply and drainage, telecommunications cables, power lines, or urban sidewalk renovation and upgrading is an essential need in the development process. However, the reality in many residential areas today reveals a worrying paradox: roads are dug up but are slow to be restored, not completely repaved with asphalt, leaving deep potholes and rough, uneven surfaces that persist for days, even months.

Residents hope the road surface will be restored soon.

In mid-December 2025, during a field visit to streets such as Le Quang Dao, Phan Hanh Son, Hoai Thanh, Tran Van Du, Ha Thi Than, and Duong Thi Xuan Quy, we observed numerous sections of sidewalks being dug up and littered with soil and sand for renovation and upgrading, including replacing paving stones and installing new drainage systems. What is concerning is that the construction process has been taking too long, causing frustration among residents.

Every day, Phan Thanh Hai (from Ngu Hanh Son ward) passes through Le Quang Dao street and shakes his head in dismay: "Just a short section of sidewalk was upgraded, but the road has been dug up and left unattended for a whole month. Bricks, stones, and sand are piled all over the sidewalk without any covering, causing dust to fly everywhere, polluting the environment and posing a traffic safety hazard."

Mr. Le Hung (residing on Ha Thi Than Street) complained that the drainage construction project has completed the pipe installation but has not yet restored the road surface. Only one side of the road remains paved, while the other side is still dirt, causing difficulties for residents when traveling. There are many potholes, leading to numerous accidents. The construction has been unfinished for the past two months, and the construction unit has not returned to complete it. Residents earnestly hope that the authorities will soon require the construction unit to pave the road surface with asphalt to ensure safety and convenience for travel.

Similarly, Ms. Pham Thi Be (whose house is at the intersection of Tran Van Du and Luu Quang Thuan streets) said: “My family runs a business, and the construction unit renovating this road has been working on it for almost 3 months now without finishing. When they started, they said it would only take 40 days, but now, several months later, the road is still in a mess. One side is dug up and hasn't been filled in yet, making it very dangerous for people to cross on one side of the road. Recently, there have been a few accidents involving vehicles falling on this section, luckily without any casualties. My family's business has been severely affected over the past few months.”

Ms. Be also believes that the renovation and upgrading work needs to be completed soon. This is because it's a peak period with Tet (Lunar New Year) approaching, and people need clear roads for trading and business.

Potential for traffic accidents

When the road surface is dug up and not promptly repaved with asphalt, the traffic infrastructure is disrupted. From a smooth and safe road surface, the route turns into sections with potholes, deep trenches, and many places where water and mud accumulate, making it slippery and particularly dangerous at night or during heavy rain, posing a significant risk to traffic safety.

Mr. Pham That (a resident on Hoai Thanh Street) suggested that, in addition to environmental impacts, construction work during the period leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year) has caused traffic congestion. At many points, construction materials occupy almost all walkways, and the road surface is littered with bricks and stones, forcing pedestrians to walk in the road, increasing the risk of collisions with vehicles. Businesses along the road have seen a significant decline in sales.

Another worrying issue is that many road excavation projects do not ensure construction safety. Barriers are inadequate, warning lights are absent or merely for show; signs are placed far away, are faded, and do not reflect light; and at night, the construction site is almost invisible. This makes it difficult for road users to react in time, especially the elderly, students, cyclists, or those unfamiliar with the area.

Mr. Vo Duc Dung, Secretary of the Party Cell of Group 39, Ngu Hanh Son Ward (where the section of Tran Van Du Street is under construction), said that the local authorities have reported the prolonged construction time, which is affecting the lives of the people, to the ward; and at the same time, requested the investor and construction unit to complete the project soon so that people can stabilize their lives and ensure traffic safety.

According to the Da Nang City Priority Infrastructure Investment Projects Management Board (the investor and project manager), the renovation and upgrading of Tran Van Du Street, from the Duong Thi Xuan Quy intersection to the Luu Quang Thuan intersection, is part of the Project to Renovate and Upgrade Inner City Roads in Ngu Hanh Son District.

The project was approved by the Chairman of the People's Committee of the city in Decision No. 2030/QD-UBND dated September 24, 2024. The Project Management Board approved the construction design for implementation following the basic design on April 4, 2025 and announced the commencement of construction on July 23, 2025.

Accordingly, the downstream drainage system of Duong Thi Xuan Quy Street (on Tran Van Du Street, from the Duong Thi Xuan Quy intersection to the Luu Quang Thuan intersection) has been completed, including the drainage system and crushed stone base, by early October 2025.

However, due to heavy rain since the beginning of October 2025, the unit has been unable to begin asphalt paving to ensure the quality of the project. The management board commits to starting asphalt paving after 5 days when the weather is favorable; and will urge the contractor to ensure traffic safety until the asphalt paving of the aforementioned section is completed.
