According to nationalnewswatch.com on December 10, Canada concluded a meeting of technology ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized nations with the signing of a series of agreements with the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom.
The memoranda of understanding focus on digital issues, including Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Although the US sent representatives to the meeting, no similar agreement was announced by either side.
In the closing press conference of the meeting, Canadian Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon said that Canada has a strong trade relationship with the US but is strengthening ties with European countries.
He said: "What we also want to do strategically, as we shift from dependence to resilience, is to expand trade. And we have done that in the last few days."
The event, which took place from December 8-9, was one of a series of ministerial meetings held this year as Canada holds the G7 presidency.
These agreements come at a time of deep divisions between the European Union – a proponent of AI regulation – and the United States, which has adopted a liberal approach to the technology under President Donald Trump.
Mr. Solomon signed a memorandum of understanding with the UK Minister for Government and Digital Data on the afternoon of December 9th.
A government press release stated that the agreement focuses on "national digital public infrastructure, reinforcing a shared commitment to secure and interoperable digital systems."
The agreement with Germany aims to strengthen cooperation on AI, quantum technology, digital sovereignty , and infrastructure. Canada has also signed two agreements with the European Union – one focusing on the responsible adoption and development of AI and another on digital certificates.
Professor Mark Daley, Director of AI at Western University, said the agreements were of real value and he was excited about what was achieved from the meeting.
He said, "The right kind of discussions are underway, and the complexity is being respected."
According to him, the agreements with the European Union and Germany include specific elements regarding infrastructure, rules, and standards that are interoperable.
