Speaking on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Jensen Huang said that re-industrialization is vital for America. “ We need to get back to manufacturing. Not everyone who succeeds needs a PhD, or a Stanford or MIT graduate,” the Nvidia CEO emphasized.

Huang argues that shifting to manufacturing is not only a way for workers to adapt to the age of AI, but also key to protecting a threatened industry. He warns that if the U.S. does not expand manufacturing and energy, national prosperity will be jeopardized.

"If America doesn't grow, we can't prosper. We can't invest in anything, we can't solve any problems," he said. "Without energy growth, there will be no industrial growth; without industrial growth, there can't be more jobs."

This sentiment aligns with the self-sufficient manufacturing direction being promoted by the Trump administration, coupled with tighter immigration policies and calls for a “generational manufacturing boom.” Some business leaders argue that this is not a step backward but rather preparation for the future. They emphasize that technical jobs in factories have low entry requirements but can offer starting salaries of $70,000-$90,000 per year, without requiring a college degree.

"It's time to train people for the jobs of the future," U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick once said on CNBC . "The new model is that you work in factories your whole life, and then your children and grandchildren follow suit."

To escape college debt or the fear of being replaced by AI, this is an attractive prospect. However, the reality is that many positions in the manufacturing sector remain vacant. Deloitte reports that the workforce in this sector has surpassed pre-pandemic levels, reaching 13 million people by early 2024. While the demand for workers could reach 3.8 million, more than half risk being left vacant due to a lack of skills and persistent prejudices about the profession.

A 2023 Soter Analytics survey found that only 14% of Gen Z would consider a manufacturing job. They worry about lack of flexibility and unsafe working conditions.

While many fear robots will replace humans, Huang sees a different path. “I’m very excited about the robots Elon Musk is working on. This technology is still a few years away, but when it becomes a reality, it will open up a whole new industry,” he said . “You’ll need a robot manufacturing industry, a robot fashion industry, robot mechanics, and even people to maintain them.”

According to the head of Nvidia, the future of jobs will not disappear because of AI, but will be reshaped to require more technical expertise, especially in factories, where he believes America needs to make a strong comeback to maintain its technological advantage.

According to the latest report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), 61% of Vietnamese surveyed expressed concern about losing their jobs or being unable to find employment due to AI.
