Vietnam and the Kingdom of Belgium established diplomatic relations on March 22, 1973. The Kingdom of Belgium was one of the first Western European countries to recognize and establish diplomatic relations with the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, immediately after the Paris Agreement on ending the war and restoring peace in Vietnam was signed.

Over the past 50 years, the relationship between the two countries has been continuously strengthened, consolidated, developed deeply and diversified, bilaterally as well as multilaterally and through all channels. Since 2018, Vietnam and Belgium have become strategic partners in agricultural cooperation - an important new milestone in the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

High-level delegation exchanges between Vietnam and Belgium take place regularly. In terms of economy, in 2022, two-way trade turnover between Vietnam and Belgium reached over 6 billion euros, a growth rate of 60% compared to 3.9 billion euros in 2021.

Belgium is currently Vietnam's sixth largest trading partner in the European Union (EU). Belgium currently has 82 projects with a total registered capital of nearly 1.1 billion USD, ranking 23rd out of 139 countries and territories investing in Vietnam, with some typical projects such as the Soc Son Waste-to-Energy Plant, Hai Phong International Port Industrial Park...

Belgium has also been an ODA donor to Vietnam since 1977, amounting to 20-25 million euros/year. Currently, Belgium continues to support Vietnam through university cooperation programs, non-governmental organizations, the private sector... Nearly 5,000 Vietnamese students have been studying in the Kingdom of Belgium.
