This year, with the important new points of eliminating early admission, converting admission scores according to percentiles, and the largest number of registrations ever, how is the virtual filtering process different from previous years?

6 consecutive virtual filtering rounds

From August 13 to August 15, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) coordinated with training institutions to review the entire database of candidates registering their wishes on the common system, preparing for a virtual filtering process.

On August 16, schools uploaded the database to the system and organized the admission exam. The Ministry of Education and Training has just required schools to announce the regulations on the difference in scores between admission combinations and the rules for converting equivalent admission scores between admission methods.

Schools cannot download data and admission information from the system if they have not publicly announced the equivalent conversion of admission scores.

According to the ministry's instructions, universities across the country will begin announcing the first round of admission scores from 5 p.m. on August 20, with the deadline for announcement being before 5 p.m. on August 22. Before the announcement, the Ministry of Education and Training will implement a nationwide virtual filtering process in university admissions this year with 6 consecutive applications processing sessions taking place from August 17 to 20.

According to Dr. Pham Tan Ha (University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City National University), the virtual filtering process in university admissions is a technique used to eliminate candidates with lower admission aspirations.

Specifically, the Ministry of Education and Training and schools will coordinate to use software to filter wishes nationwide, ensuring that each candidate is only admitted to the highest wish that the candidate has registered for, avoiding the situation where a candidate is admitted to many majors/schools at the same time.

This virtual filtering not only helps predict the correct number of admitted candidates, but also helps schools make reasonable adjustments by increasing or decreasing the benchmark score, avoiding the situation of having too many or too few quotas.

The national virtual filtering system is operated by the Ministry of Education and Training, ensuring synchronization and accuracy. In addition, there are two virtual filtering groups in the South with nearly 90 schools (chaired by Ho Chi Minh City National University) and a virtual filtering group in the North with 65 schools (chaired by Hanoi University of Science and Technology).

The admission and virtual filtering process in the two groups of schools in the North and the South includes the following steps: reviewing admission methods, admission combinations, preliminary admission conditions, comparison conditions, choosing admission methods, running the software to conduct admission for all methods...

The virtual filtering process does not only take place within a school, but also between different schools and majors. The Ministry will conduct virtual filtering nationwide to ensure that there is no overlap between candidates, and at the same time, schools will receive enough successful candidates according to their enrollment quota.

Schools self-select

After the virtual filtering process, schools will calculate virtual candidates in the group and outside the group to adjust the benchmark score, propose expected admission results and enter them into the system for the group to perform the first virtual filtering.

After the first virtual filtering, the results will be exported and uploaded to the virtual filtering system of the Ministry. After each virtual filtering of the Ministry of Education and Training, each school will take the results of analysis, review... export the expected admission results and enter them into the system to perform the next virtual filtering.

Dr. Duong Ton Thai Duong, deputy head of the training department of Ho Chi Minh City National University, said that the schools participating in this year's Southern virtual filtering group have met and agreed on the time, process, and principles of implementation.

Interspersed with the 6 virtual filtering sessions nationwide by the Ministry of Education and Training, schools participating in this virtual filtering group will have 10 virtual filtering sessions in the group.

Associate Professor Dr. Vu Duy Hai, head of the Admissions and Career Guidance Department of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, also said that with this year's adjustments, Hanoi University of Science and Technology has coordinated with units in the group to update and perfect the software, adjust the process and plan a general technical solution for the entire system.

"Currently, the training and testing work for the entire group has been successfully completed to prepare for the manipulation of this year's candidate registration data. The candidate registration data must be kept confidential, stored securely, and ready to be cross-checked when required," said Mr. Hai.

Regarding the admission principles on the system of the Ministry of Education and Training, according to Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan - Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, all wishes of candidates who register and pay full fees on the system are recorded.

First, the ministry will return the data to the schools to calculate the bonus points (the bonus points in admission according to the regulations do not exceed 10%). After the schools add the bonus points, the candidates' score data will be pushed back to the ministry's system to begin the admission process.

"The admission process will be carried out according to the expected benchmark scores set by each school (each school will set a different score for each major). The system will process candidates' registrations based on the order of their wishes, only counting the highest wish that meets the benchmark score for each candidate. If the first wish fails, the next wishes will be automatically considered.

For example, a candidate places his/her first choice in a major at school A and several other choices in the same school or different schools. School A takes 25 points (including bonus points, priority points) and in the first choice, if the candidate has a score greater than or equal to 25 points, he/she will be admitted and the admission process of this candidate will stop," Mr. Nhan further explained.

Virtual filtering process

The Ministry of Education and Training uses a nationwide virtual filtering system to mark candidates who have been admitted to a higher choice at another school. After each filtering round, the temporary admission list of each school will be updated.

Based on the virtual filtering results, the school considers adjusting the benchmark scores of the majors so that the number of successful candidates is close to the quota. After each filtering round, the schools send a new list and adjust, continuing the next filtering round.
