K“Since switching to the multi-stem, top-dropping model, I have seen clear results. It has reduced a lot of work on shoots and branches. I only need to select the first batch, and I hardly need to prune the following batches,” said Mr. Vi Van Ty.
As a pioneer in the locality, Mr. Ty applies a systematic fertilization process, fertilizing 4 times/year and increasing the amount of fertilizer by 10-30% to meet the nutritional needs of multi-stem trees. Thanks to that, in the 2024 crop, his family's 1.7 hectares of "lazy" coffee yielded more than 24 tons of fresh fruit, earning about 700 million VND after deducting expenses.
According to Mr. Ty, for households planning to plant new coffee, the multi-stem coffee model with top-dropping or multi-stem coffee with top-stopping both bring high productivity and should be the priority choice.
Currently, Ngok Tu commune has nearly 500 hectares of coffee. The trend of switching to the multi-stem model has increased sharply in the past two years. Mr. Phan Van Tuan - Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee - said: "This model gives outstanding productivity. In Lam Dong , the yield can reach 6-8 tons of beans/ha, while the traditional model only reaches a maximum of about 4.5-5 tons of beans/ha. In the coming time, the commune will assign the General Service Center to provide technical guidance to the people."
The conversion to the multi-stem, drop-top coffee model is opening up a new production direction, helping farmers reduce labor, increase competitiveness and increase income. This is also an important step to build a sustainable coffee region in the western region of Quang Ngai .
