A trio of one-off Bentleys inspired by masterpieces by Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Vermeer were the focus of a special event at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. The Dutch Masters by Mulliner collection is a tribute to the Netherlands’ masterful craftsmanship, timeless elegance and rich artistic heritage. Over 200 guests from Bentley Leusden, Bentley Rotterdam and Bentley Maastricht were able to view the three Bentley Mulliners in virtual reality, and then attend a special dinner in the museum’s Gallery of Honour. The three Continental GTs, named “Rembrandt” (convertible), “Vermeer” and “Van Gogh”, respectively, recreated the artist’s signature palette and motifs, translating their artistic vision into the world of Bentley.
Rembrandt's 1642 masterpiece “The Night Watch” is the inspiration for the first-ever Bentley Continental GT Convertible in Midnight Emerald. Captain Frans Banninck Cocq’s crimson ribbon is echoed in the interior’s Hotspur red leather accents, while the lieutenant’s coat inspired Mulliner to choose a Magnolia main leather that pairs perfectly with the Cumbrian Green sub-leather. The large dashboard fascia and waistrails are finished in a piano gloss Cumbrian Green, accented with shimmering gold on the air vent knobs. When opened at night, the welcome lights project an animated feather – a nod to the feather on the lieutenant’s cap in the painting. The feather motif also appears on the front and rear door panels, while the door sills and front fenders both carry “Dutch Masters Collection” plaques.
Johannes Vermeer is considered one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age. His paintings are filled with the clear, cold light of his hometown Delft. The Mulliner design team used his vibrant blue and yellow hues as the basis for the Continental GT in satin Sapphire. Fitting for a painter of light-filled spaces, the car features a panoramic sunroof. The interior is a Beluga and Ocean Blue leather combination, brightened by Citric Yellow accents and striking Klein Blue seat piping. The billowing cloud motif from the masterpiece “The Little Street” (1658) is chosen for the welcome lamp projection and door panels. The large dashboard panel and horizontal strips around the cabin are all finished in a piano gloss, with a special highlight being the inner ring and the Bentley Rotating Display knob painted in Klein Blue. Vincent van Gogh's art was rejected during his lifetime, but his impressively received paintings, many inspired by the intense heat of Provence, are now among the most valuable in the world.
The third Continental GT by Mulliner is finished in Dark Sapphire with Khamun Yellow, using a palette of Imperial Blue, Dark Sapphire, Linen and Khamun to evoke Van Gogh’s unique vision. The masterpiece “The Starry Night” inspires both the color and the pattern: the spiraling sky and golden moon are echoed in the welcome lights and the bespoke engraved door panels. The large dashboard and the horizontal strips around the cabin are finished in a double Piano finish, divided in a Dark Sapphire paint scheme that matches the exterior. Van Gogh’s Indian Gold for the stars is reflected in Khamun leather accents, embroidered Bentley logos, and contrast stitching. Other special details include an open-pore chiseled Walnut center console and gold-plated air vent knobs. Each Bentley in the Dutch Masters collection comes with a bespoke key fob, finished in matching leather. The inner lid is laser-engraved with the artist’s own design – feathers, clouds or a starry sky. All three cars are available with the Blackline Specification, Touring Specification and body-coloured bodykit, for a discreetly elegant finish.
