According to AP , in a video posted on Facebook, Benin Interior Minister Alassane Seidou announced that the country's armed forces had foiled a coup attempt on December 7.
"In the early morning of December 7, 2025, a small group of soldiers launched a mutiny aimed at destabilizing the State. In this situation, the Benin Armed Forces and its leadership remain loyal to the country," Minister Seidou said.

It is known that earlier, a group of soldiers, calling themselves the Military Committee for Reconstruction, appeared on Benin state television and announced the dissolution of the Government , the dismissal of the President and all state agencies. Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri was appointed Chairman of the Military Committee.
There has been no official word on President Patrice Talon since gunfire rang out around the presidential palace. However, the signals of state television and public radio, which were cut off, have now been restored.
In a statement, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) bloc condemned the coup attempt in Benin.
“ECOWAS strongly condemns this unconstitutional move, which represents a subversion of the will of the people of Benin. ECOWAS will support the Government and people in all forms necessary to defend the Constitution and the territorial integrity of Benin,” the bloc said in a statement.
