The exam question provides an excerpt from the short story "Different Skies" by writer Nguyen Minh Chau, revolving around a conversation between two soldiers, Le and Son, who come from different regions and fight together during the resistance war against the US. Based on this excerpt, the question asks candidates to write an argumentative essay on the topic: "Every homeland's sky is the sky of the Fatherland" – a topical issue in the context of Vietnam's restructuring of its administrative apparatus into a two-tiered government model, merging many provinces, cities, and localities. The exam places a higher demand on candidates' text analysis skills, independent thinking, and ability to grasp current events.
Bui Phuong Anh, a student from Hon Gai High School, shared: "Following the new curriculum's guidelines, this year's exam questions are more open-ended. Thanks to this broad and realistic approach, I feel more comfortable expressing my thoughts. I particularly appreciate the exam questions because they evoke love for my homeland and country, while also reminding the younger generation to preserve the core traditional values of the nation and linking them to current events. I chose the C00 subject combination for the Social Sciences block, and I'm confident my Literature exam score will be 7 points or higher."
Immediately after the exam, most candidates commented that this year's exam was innovative, with a broad but manageable range of topics. The necessary knowledge and skills had been thoroughly reviewed by their teachers. If students studied seriously and diligently according to their teachers' guidance, they could certainly achieve a good score.
Do Thi Hoai, a candidate taking the exam at Hon Gai High School, shared: "The Literature exam lasted 120 minutes. I spent the first 10-15 minutes reading the questions, 45 minutes on the reading comprehension section, and the remaining time on the writing section to complete all the required parts of the exam."
Nguyen Ngoc Thang, on the other hand, appeared optimistic and cheerful after completing his Literature exam. Thang shared: "The exam questions were diverse and open-ended, allowing me to express my personal views. I focused on love for my homeland and related it to my responsibility in protecting the country."
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Dan, a Literature teacher at Ha Long Specialized High School, this year's Literature exam was excellent and helped to fully develop the students' abilities.
Ms. Dan shared: First of all, the exam questions are entirely within the knowledge and skills framework of the 2018 General Education Program, which students have already studied and reviewed; and they also follow the structure of the sample exam provided by the Ministry of Education and Training . A special and interesting aspect of this year's exam is the inclusion of an excerpt from the work "Different Skies" by writer Nguyen Minh Chau. This can be considered a timeless work on the theme of love for one's homeland and country, by one of the most representative and influential writers in Vietnamese literature during the resistance war and the early period of the reform process. Therefore, this text will help students maximize their abilities in all skills: reading, comprehension, and writing; and it will also inspire many ideas for developing the social commentary essay, especially in the context of the country standing at the threshold of a new era of progress.
