The Lo Xo Pass in Quang Ngai suffered a serious landslide, trapping approximately 70 people in the middle of the pass.

Despite heavy rain and no sign of stopping the landslides, at noon on October 28, authorities waded through the landslide area to deliver food and water to those trapped on Lo Xo Pass.

Over the past two days, serious landslides have occurred on the Ho Chi Minh Highway, specifically the section through Lo Xo Pass, at the border between Dak Plo commune (Quang Ngai province) and Da Nang city.

There are at least three major landslides along the route, severely impacting traffic on the Ho Chi Minh Highway.

Below, the ground is leveled; above, the soil is eroded.

Specifically, at kilometers 1408 to 1405, the section passing over the Dak Zon bridge in Mang Khen village, Dak Plo commune, experienced a serious landslide. Tens of thousands of cubic meters of soil, rocks, and trees slid down from the embankment and spilled onto the Ho Chi Minh Highway. The landslide extended for approximately 300 meters.

At the scene, soil and rocks have slid down, rising more than 5 meters above the road surface. To address the landslide, authorities have mobilized 4 excavators and 2 bulldozers to the site to clear the debris over the past two days.

Mr. Tran Thai Hoa, Head of the representative office of the Road Management Sub-Department III.4 in Quang Ngai, said: "Currently, it is raining heavily, and water flowing down the hillside is making it difficult for us to clear the debris. At the section near Dak Zon bridge, the landslide volume is extremely large, estimated at over 20,000 cubic meters. At the construction site, we have deployed 4 excavators and 2 bulldozers. We are working in 3 shifts throughout the night. We are determined to clear one lane of the road today. However, the heavy rain and wind are very dangerous for people and vehicles involved in clearing the landslide. During the work, soil and rocks are constantly falling from below, making it extremely difficult and dangerous for people and vehicles involved in clearing the landslide."

Despite the tireless efforts of the authorities, who have been working in shifts without rest, the work of clearing the landslide here is facing many difficulties.

Heavy rain at Lo Xo Pass has caused landslides with no sign of stopping. The heavier the rain, the more soil and rocks from the top of the embankment are carried down onto the road. Authorities are facing difficulties in clearing the road in one lane. Despite working tirelessly for the past two days, they have not yet been able to open a path to access the site further inside.

Approximately 70 people are stranded in the mountain pass.

While remediation efforts at the landslide at kilometer 1804, near the Dak Zon bridge, are facing numerous difficulties, further inland, about 2km from the landslide site, 40 vehicles, mostly trucks, and approximately 70 people are stranded and unable to move for the past two days, particularly in the section towards Da Nang city.

In response to the situation, authorities in Quang Ngai province coordinated efforts to reach the scene and provide food, rice, bread, and water to those trapped. However, accessing and supplying necessities to approximately 70 people proved quite challenging for the authorities.

Nguyen Vy Ly, a member of the SOS team at Lo Xo Pass, said that after receiving information from authorities and local government about 40 vehicles and dozens of people stranded due to landslides on Lo Xo Pass, the SOS team mobilized local people and coordinated with the government and traffic police of Quang Ngai province to cook meals and provide essential supplies to those stranded on the pass.

"The landslide extended for over 300 meters and involved a large volume of material. We used drones for preliminary surveys to ensure safety when our team delivered supplies. We had to carry food and water across the landslide area. Despite the difficulties and dangers, our team gave their all for the people trapped on the other side," Ly said.

Despite heavy rain and no sign of stopping the landslides, at noon on October 28th, rescue forces waded through the landslide area to deliver food and water to those trapped. To reach the supply point, they had to walk and wade through mud and soil for nearly two hours before they could reach the people.

Lieutenant Colonel Duong Van Khoi, Deputy Head of the Traffic Police Department of Quang Ngai province, who directly participated in walking and supplying food and water to people stranded on the road, said that over the past three days, heavy rain has occurred on the Ho Chi Minh Highway, especially the section through Lo Xo Pass.

In response to the situation, the Ngoc Hoi Traffic Police Station (Quang Ngai Provincial Police) coordinated with relevant authorities and the Lo Xo Pass SOS team to reroute traffic, move people and vehicles from the top of the pass to a safe location, and coordinate with the SOS team to deliver food and water to those trapped between the two landslide sections.
