Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Duc Son, Principal of Hanoi National University of Education, said that the high benchmark score was due to the large number of candidates registering while the enrollment quota was limited.
On the sidelines of the 2023-2024 Academic Year Summary Conference, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Duc Son, Principal of Hanoi National University of Education, shared with the press about the school's benchmark scores being "high as the roof." This year, the school has two majors with benchmark scores of up to 29.3 points for three subjects.
Many incentives, the education industry is increasingly "hot"
- Dear Associate Professor, how do you evaluate the admission score based on the High School Graduation Exam scores for pedagogical schools in general and Hanoi National University of Education in particular this year?
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Duc Son: Up to this point, almost all universities have announced their admission scores. In general, the admission scores for teacher training schools this year have increased, not only for Hanoi National University of Education.
There are many reasons for the increase in the benchmark scores. It can be seen that the policies of the Party and the State, especially the policies on tuition and living allowances, have attracted an increasing number of students to the education sector. This year, according to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training , the number of candidates applying to the education sector has skyrocketed. The quota is limited among the large number of applicants, so only the top candidates have enough points to pass. I think that is a positive sign.
The majors with the highest benchmark scores are Literature Pedagogy and History Pedagogy with the same score of 29.3 points; followed by Geography Pedagogy with 29.05 points. In addition, the school also has 7 majors with scores above 28 points.
Another difference is that the number of candidates applying for direct admission is quite high. This year, the school has about 300 national excellent students applying for various majors. This makes the competition even more fierce.
- In some fields, students who get 29 points but still fail, do you think it is normal or abnormal?
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Duc Son: If we look at it by comparing this year's scores with other years, it seems that the benchmark is too high, but if we look at it from a university admissions perspective, that is, recruiting people with enough capacity to enter and selecting from top to bottom, if there are many people at the top and have met the quota, then those at the bottom will of course lose their chance. That is the rule of selection.
- However, parents are concerned that this will affect students' psychology, sir?
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Duc Son: From the perspective of parents, this concern is understandable. However, students can register for many wishes, so if they have high scores and are not admitted to this major, they can be admitted to another major.
I think it's normal in life and we have to learn to accept that we are good but there are many people around who are better.
The difficult problem of early admission
- According to you, from 2025 onwards, do students have to wait until the High School Graduation Exam to be considered for admission or should they take a separate exam or be considered for early admission?
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Duc Son: In the context of next year, our advice is that candidates should pay close attention to policy adjustments of schools and the Ministry of Education and Training.
In the recent conference on university education review, the Ministry of Education and Training has given some orientations for next year's admissions. For example, early admissions will have orientations and certain changes. Universities, including Hanoi National University of Education, will have to adjust the challenges as well as the admissions process next year. Therefore, I cannot say for sure what methods will be available next year.
However, the number one principle is that we will maintain stability, and thus admission based on high school graduation exam scores is certain. Up to this point, universities still take a relatively large proportion from this method.
Therefore, I think the advice for grade 12 students is to keep a close eye on the admissions trends of the schools.
According to experts, the benchmark score increased due to higher High School Graduation Exam scores, the number of candidates increased while the quota for admission based on exam scores decreased.
- Regarding early admission, the Ministry of Education and Training said that there may be regulations to adjust this issue because early admission makes students neglectful at the end of the school year. What is your opinion on this issue?
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Duc Son: The issue of early testing has many aspects. Aspect number 1 is related to university autonomy. Obviously, universities have a certain autonomy in the admission process and I think that needs to be respected to a certain extent.
However, in reality, there are opinions, especially opinions from high schools, that early approval, for example, only considering the scores of 5 semesters of transcripts, leads to students not focusing deeply on studying to complete the high school program. This is the problem that we are trying to find a way to handle.
In my opinion, there must be a harmonious way of handling this. Universities still have the opportunity to use different admission methods to ensure their own admission, but at the same time, they must ensure that university admissions do not go against general education.
The very basic principle is that the entrance requirements of higher education are the requirements aimed at improving the quality of general education. And so, if the entrance of higher education does not contribute to improving the quality of general education, it is not acceptable. And that is the problem.
Of course, this is a very difficult problem, involving many parties. Therefore, I think experts must sit down and figure out how to solve this problem./.
