Recently, Phu Quoc was unexpectedly honored by Travel+Leisure as the second most popular island in the world in 2024, surpassing even tourist "hot spots" like Bali, Indonesia and Phuket, Thailand, and ranking just behind the Maldives.

Speaking of Phu Quoc, this magazine introduces the island city located off the west coast of Vietnam as an emerging tourist destination, and this is also the island's greatest strength. While some beaches in Southeast Asia are developing, Phu Quoc remains one of the rare places that retains its pristine and peaceful atmosphere. However, that doesn't mean Phu Quoc lacks the most luxurious hotels with top-class amenities.

An emerging destination with pristine nature.

As Travel+Leisure and international media are portraying Phu Quoc, the island is a "precious gem" with a proud natural beauty not found everywhere. Phu Quoc is the largest island in Vietnam (573 km² ) with 22 islands of varying sizes, boasting white sandy beaches surrounded by crystal-clear turquoise waters. The most famous beaches include Bai Kem, Bai Sao, Bai Truong, and Bai Ong Lang, all possessing a pristine, romantic, and peaceful beauty. Phu Quoc also has a National Park and the Phu Quoc Marine Protected Area, covering more than two-thirds of its natural area and forming the core of the Kien Giang World Biosphere Reserve.

The most attractive area for tourists is undoubtedly the southern part of the island, with its 12 different islands belonging to the An Thoi archipelago. Unlike most beaches in Phu Quoc, the southern beaches are exceptionally clear and blue, characterized by fine, white, creamy sand. This area is also known for its abundant marine resources, with colorful and uniquely shaped coral reefs spread across the islands. Along with diverse fish and seagrass species, it's an ideal location for those who enjoy scuba diving and admiring the beauty of the ocean.

It's not difficult to understand why Phu Quoc always makes many destinations envious, as the island consistently ranks among the top natural and most popular destinations. Around the same time as Travel+Leisure's announcement, Rankify Korea, a South Korean data network and the number one source market for tourists to Vietnam, also recently announced its top 10 most popular overseas destinations for South Korean tourists. Surprisingly, Phu Quoc ranked number one, surpassing both Nha Trang, Vietnam, and Tokyo, Japan. Prior to this, Phu Quoc was honored by the World Travel Awards, dubbed the Oscars of world tourism, as the "World's Leading Island Destination with Natural Beauty."

The allure doesn't just come from nature.

In an interview regarding the airline's plans to increase flights to Phu Quoc in the second half of the year, Mr. Kim Kye Yong, CEO of Korean Air in Vietnam, explained the island's appeal: “Beyond its pristine nature, Phu Quoc is attractive because it boasts many luxurious hotels, the world's longest three-wire cable car system, fascinating theme parks, and stunning European-style architecture. Korean tourists love taking photos to post on social media, and this is why they love this place so much. In other words, Phu Quoc is a destination where you can relax and enjoy many experiences at the same time.”

In recent years, Phu Quoc has gradually become a true "holiday paradise" with the arrival of numerous world-renowned resort brands. The first significant event that brought Phu Quoc to the attention of the global media was the 5-star JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay resort, owned by Sun Group and managed by Marriott International. The resort successfully attracted high-end travelers from around the world, including Indian billionaire Kaabia Grewal, who chose it as the location for his lavish 7-day wedding.

Following the success of Marriott International, the southern part of the island has also attracted a series of renowned brands such as Accor, Rosewood Hotels, and Hilton, launching "superb" resorts in Bai Kem, Mui Ong Doi, and Sunset Town.

Positioned to become a "new destination of the world," Phu Quoc is also receiving investment to become even more attractive and offer more diverse experiences for tourists, with a series of "super projects" that have created a boom for tourism on the Pearl Island. Typical examples include Sunset Town – an entertainment complex with the largest investment in Vietnam, totaling 4 trillion VND, offering visitors fun experiences day and night, 365 days a year. These include the Kissing Bridge – an iconic structure praised by CNN, the world-leading multimedia art show Kissing the Sea, the first seaside night market in Vietnam – Vui Phet, and the Viet A Oi puppet theater. From here, visitors can also easily connect to Hon Thom Island via the world's longest three-wire sea-crossing cable car, reaching the land of a million joys, Sun World Hon Thom.

What helped Phu Quoc

Sunset Town is an entertainment complex located in the south of Phu Quoc Island, featuring many new tourism icons of Vietnam and the world.

Currently, Phu Quoc is also the only island in Vietnam that grants visa-free entry to tourists for stays of up to 30 days. Experts predict that Phu Quoc could welcome up to 14.6 million tourists in 2024, directly competing with major Asian tourist destinations such as Phuket and Bali. The continuous international accolades and awards, especially Phu Quoc surpassing two other paradise islands in the prestigious Travel+Leisure ranking, not only affirm the island's growing appeal and status among international tourists but also signal a vibrant future for Vietnam's island and coastal tourism industry.
