Dong Thap: Farmers' Association actively contributes to socio-economic development

On the afternoon of November 18, the People's Committee of Dong Thap province organized a workshop on "Promoting the community value of guild halls", with the participation of Secretary of Dong Thap Provincial Party Committee Le Quoc Phong, representatives of 145 guild halls in the province, international organizations and leaders of departments and branches in the province.

Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dong Thap province Nguyen Van Vu Minh said that on July 3, 2016, Canh Tan Hoi Quan was first established in An Nhon commune, Chau Thanh district, Dong Thap province. Up to now, the model has spread to most communes, wards and towns, with 145 clubs and 7,580 members.

The association operates in a variety of fields such as: fruit tree production, rice, vegetables, ornamental flowers, raising catfish, cage fish, eel meat, dried fish production, multi-industry business, tourism and flour production... And has established 35 new cooperatives from the association model. This shows that the association model is a solid foundation for the strong transformation of agricultural production from "quantity" to "quality".

Up to now, the model has actively contributed to the socio -economic development of the locality and laid the foundation for sustainable changes in agriculture, farmers, and rural areas, solving the problem of "linkage - cooperation" between farmers. This is an important link to implement "collective buying, collective selling", contributing to "reducing costs - increasing quality", strongly transforming the mindset from "agricultural production" to "agricultural economics".

Sharing the practical situation in Binh Thuan province, Mr. Huynh Quang Huy, Head of the Department of Fisheries of Binh Thuan province, said: Witnessing the decline in aquatic resources, people's livelihoods are unstable, due to the situation of illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing (IUU) because it has not been completely prevented. While this is a key fishing ground of the South Central and Southeast regions, with Hon Cau and Phu Quy marine reserves and many aquatic spawning grounds, where sea turtles migrate to forage and reproduce in Vietnam.

“Recognizing the importance of the community in managing and protecting aquatic resources, the province maintains the activities of 4 community organizations participating in co-management in protecting aquatic resources, with 538 household members. Each community organization has formed and built patrol/monitoring teams, propaganda teams, with self-management regulations, methodical activities, with the widespread participation of many local people. Since then, aquatic resources in the management area and neighboring areas have recovered and developed very well, many aquatic species that were extinct for many years have recovered, bringing good income to boats in the area”, Mr. Huynh Quang Huy shared.

Delegates had many presentations at the two workshops "Promoting the role of self-reliant, self-managed, autonomous communities, changing agricultural economic thinking" and "The association participates in environmental protection, promoting the value of community cultural identity and developing agricultural tourism".
