In order to fulfill the environmental criteria in building new rural areas, the Women's Union of Cau Ngang district ( Tra Vinh province) has launched the "one woman - one green tree" and "one green tree project" campaigns.
The program, launched with the support of the Tra Vinh Provincial Women's Union, aims to build model routes for protecting a green, clean, and beautiful environment in Vinh Kim and Long Son communes.
In addition, the Women's Union branches in Cau Ngang district implemented 15 projects to build flower-lined roads, new rural flower-lined roads, and bright, green, clean, and beautiful roads, launching a campaign to plant 10,000 flowering trees of various types, stretching over 13km, with a total cost of 761 million VND.
The women's flower-lined road contributes to building new rural areas.
The flower-lined road model is one of the practical and effective activities that contributes to cleaning and beautifying the environmental landscape, implemented by the Women's Union of Vinh Kim commune at all levels. It also helps to raise awareness, spirit, and responsibility among the people to work together to build a new rural area.
According to Ms. Tran Le Nga, President of the Women's Union of Vinh Kim commune, the model of flower-lined roads contributes to the effective implementation of the campaign to build families with 5 no's and 3 clean aspects, associated with building new rural areas.
Building flower-lined roads and pathways contributes to raising awareness among officials, members, and women about protecting a green, clean, and beautiful environment.
Flower-lined road, a new rural flower-lined road in Giồng Lớn hamlet, Vinh Kim commune, Cầu Ngang district, Trà Vinh province.
To date, there are 5 flower-lined roads in the commune. In recent years, the campaign to build "5 no's and 3 clean" families in the area has become well-established and has been effectively and voluntarily implemented by women's association members. To date, 1,611 out of 1,650 member households in the commune have met the 8 criteria of the "5 No's, 3 Cleanliness" family model, accounting for 97.6%. In 2022, the Association developed a plan and directed its branches to assist 28 households that had not yet met the 8 criteria of the "5 No's, 3 Cleanliness" family model.
The association maintains the "5 No's, 3 Cleanliness" model in conjunction with building new rural areas, and to date, 10 out of 10 branches have member households meeting the 8 criteria of the "5 No's, 3 Cleanliness" family model, accounting for over 85.6% of the total membership.
Ms. Cao Thi Ngoi, Head of the Women's Association in Giong Lon hamlet, Vinh Kim commune, said: "Since the flower-lined roads were established, the awareness of protecting the environment among women's association members and residents in the hamlet has been raised."Along the newly planted rural roads, littering has been reduced, and residents regularly weed and clean the areas in front of their houses and yards.
To maintain the flower-lined road, every week officials, women's association members, and local residents clear bushes, plant more flowers, clean and care for the flowers, creating a clean, beautiful, and airy landscape along the road, contributing to the new rural appearance of the area.
The road lined with butterfly pea flowers makes the villages beautiful and provides residents with additional income.
In Hiep My Dong commune, Cau Ngang district (Tra Vinh province), flower-lined roads are adorned with a variety of flowers such as banana blossoms, yellow jasmine, portulaca, etc., all vying to show off their beauty. The villagers voluntarily plant additional flowers and take care of them regularly, creating a clean and beautiful natural landscape for their homeland.
Among them, the butterfly pea flower path created by women in Khuc Ngay hamlet, Hiep My Dong commune, is considered a beautiful natural flower path that contributes to generating additional income for idle women in the hamlet.
Women's association members in Khuc Ngay hamlet, Hiep My Dong commune, Cau Ngang district (Tra Vinh province) harvest butterfly pea flowers along the new rural flower road.
In an effort to contribute to building an advanced new rural commune, in 2021, the Women's Union of Hiep My Dong commune propagated butterfly pea flowers for trial planting along both sides of the asphalt road in Khuc Ngay hamlet.
The butterfly pea flower path was entrusted to two female members to care for, aiming to create a beautiful environment and increase income, with the first harvest selling for 300,000 VND per dried butterfly pea flower.
Since then, many women in Khuc Ngay hamlet have not only focused on planting butterfly pea flowers along both sides of the asphalt road in front of their houses, but have also expanded to intercropping them in areas used for growing grass to feed cattle, in order to increase their family income.
Since the Women's Union of the commune launched and supported the planting of butterfly pea seedlings along the rural roadside in front of her house, Ms. Pham Thi Lanh, a member of the Women's Union in Khuc Ngay hamlet, has actively responded by planting and caring for the plants, and now the butterfly pea plants are yielding flowers for harvest.Ms. Pham Thi Lanh said: "With 20 butterfly pea plants, we harvest about 10kg of fresh flowers weekly. After drying, we get 1kg of dried flowers, which we sell for 170,000 VND/kg."
Because it was recently planted, the yield of butterfly pea flowers harvested was low. Butterfly pea plants are not only easy to grow and care for, but also require no investment costs. After the plants flower and bear fruit, she takes the mature fruits, extracts the seeds, sows them, and plants them in other areas around her house.
Ms. Le Thi Tri, President of the Women's Union of Hiep My Dong commune, said: "Growing butterfly pea flowers not only increases family income but also contributes to building a green, clean, and beautiful environment."By September 2022, the Women's Union of the commune had mobilized women to participate in developing the No. 1 Butterfly Pea Flower Cultivation Cooperative in Khuc Ngay hamlet, operating under Government Decree No. 77/2019/ND-CP dated October 10, 2019, regulating cooperatives, with 30 members.
Currently, the cooperative has 16 women who harvest daily and supply dried flowers weekly to the purchasing unit, earning a monthly income of 1-1.5 million VND. On average, 10 kg of fresh butterfly pea flowers yield 1 kg of dried flowers.
The cycle of butterfly pea plants from planting to flowering is about two months. On average, each woman plants 20-50 plants along the road in front of her house, so the product is currently in high demand, with the cooperative supplying an average of 13-14 kg of dried flowers per week.
In the future, the Association will invest in drying machines to help women reduce labor and aim to develop butterfly pea flower tea products towards becoming OCOP products.
Ms. Le Thi Deo (right), head of the butterfly pea flower cultivation cooperative group 1, My Hiep Dong commune, Cau Ngang district, Tra Vinh province, harvests butterfly pea flowers for drying.
Ms. Le Thi Deo, head of the butterfly pea flower cultivation cooperative group 1, said: currently, the Women's Union of the commune has linked up to resolve the product's output issue for the butterfly pea flower products.
When they first started growing the flowers, her husband didn't support it because of the low yield and income. Later, when the supply couldn't meet the demand, he joined in helping with the daily harvesting of fresh flowers.
Every week, she harvests about 15kg of fresh butterfly pea flowers, earning 250,000 - 300,000 VND per week. Thanks to this income, she is able to afford voluntary social insurance.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong, a member of the butterfly pea flower growing cooperative 1, said that although growing butterfly pea flowers requires little effort and almost no investment, harvesting and drying the flowers is labor-intensive.
The disadvantage of growing butterfly pea flowers is that during the rainy season, they cannot be dried properly, and the flowers become damp and moldy, resulting in crop failure and wasted labor.
Therefore, we hope that the Women's Union of the commune will cooperate with purchasing facilities to invest in drying machines, solve the problem of selling fresh flowers, and help women reduce their labor and have a regular income.
According to Ms. Tran Thi Thu Thao, President of the Women's Union of Cau Ngang district (Tra Vinh province), in 2022, the Women's Union at all levels in the district mobilized the establishment of 2 economic cooperative models (growing vegetables and butterfly pea flowers) with 40 members. To date, the entire district has 24 economic models with 57 groups and approximately 788 members. The cooperative model for growing butterfly pea flowers is one of the effective economic development models of the Women's Union of Hiep My Dong commune, aiming to create a beautiful environment in the implementation of advanced new rural development; it also brings high economic efficiency and opens up a way to solve the problem of idle employment for rural laborers, especially women.
