The "Swallow and Swan in Harmony" collection features traditional wedding ao dai designs that embody the national spirit while also incorporating a contemporary touch.
Designer Thuy Nguyen said that her designs are inspired by the image of the girl in "Da Co Hoai Lang" - the immortal work of the late musician Cao Van Lau.
It was the essence of cải lương (Vietnamese traditional opera) that acted as a catalyst in Thủy Nguyễn's creativity, resulting in approximately 60 new designs.
With dominant colors of white, red, and pink, Thuy Nguyen applies techniques of hand-painting, embroidery, and embellishment to create vibrant nature scenes on the dresses.
The harmonious arrangement of motifs such as birds, phoenixes, peach blossoms, apricot blossoms, and lotus flowers makes the ao dai dress more refined and vibrant.
Besides traditional ao dai designs, Thuy Nguyen also introduced innovative, modern designs that still harmonize with traditional elements, under the collection theme "Swallows and Swans United."
These designs are often accompanied by large headpieces, adding a visual highlight for fashion enthusiasts.
This is also seen as a mark of the cultural exchange between East and West, where the traditional ao dai "meets" contemporary emotions.
First runner-up Lam Bich Tuyen opened the show in an elegant ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress).
Runner-up Le Hang wore a white ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress) with pink lotus flower motifs.
"The collection is like a traditional Vietnamese opera, with rhythm, melody, and emotion, showcasing cultural depth. The designs also demonstrate the interplay between traditional beauty and innovative creations, honoring the ao dai (Vietnamese traditional dress) while evoking pride in the nation's cultural heritage," shared designer Thuy Nguyen.
The "Swallow and Swan in Pair" collection was showcased as part of the Vietnam International Fashion Week currently taking place in Hanoi .
First runner-up Lam Bich Tuyen wore a vibrant yellow design for the opening performance. The design, embroidered with phoenix motifs, symbolized pride for the wearer. Second runner-up Le Hang wore a white and pink ao dai with lotus flower patterns for the closing performance.
The design retains traditional beauty while still conveying a contemporary feel.
A large headpiece adds a striking touch to the ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress).
Modernized ao dai dresses offer a fresh perspective for the wearer.
