After three and a half years of online chatting – one in Vietnam, one in Belgium, the second time they met, Thanh Thuy and Men Cheo (also known as Mati) decided to register their marriage. The geographical distance during Covid-19 was not an obstacle that broke up their relationship.
Dating through dating apps
Thuy (30 years old, from Dak Lak ) met Cheo (33 years old, from Belgium) in late 2018 through a dating app. Initially, Cheo sent a greeting on the dating app to Huong, Thuy's twin sister. Huong did not know English so Thuy replied on her behalf.
Having majored in English, Thuy was able to converse fluently with Cheo. “At first, Thuy talked to Cheo because she wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to practice English communication, not thinking about having a foreign boyfriend.
From then on, every time Cheo texted, Huong would give Thuy the answer. Like that, sometimes we asked each other a few questions, I still replied to Cheo using my sister's "nick".
The more they talked, the more they felt connected and had feelings for each other. That was why Thuy decided to tell Cheo that she was not the owner of this account. At first, she was worried that it would make him angry, but Cheo's answer made Thuy remember it forever. He said: "This doesn't affect anything. I've always talked to you because I like your stories, not because of your name or profile picture."
After that “confession”, the couple talked to each other more. Many times Cheo suggested meeting for the first time in Vietnam, but Thuy was not ready. She had never intended to date a foreign boyfriend.
There was a time when Thuy decided to stop because she didn't believe this relationship would work. She decided to stay silent and not respond to Cheo anymore.
I thought it would be over, but after more than 3 weeks without hearing back from Thuy, Cheo texted her sister to ask if she was okay and safe. “This made me emotional and completely changed my mind about our relationship.”
The couple's first trip during Cheo's return to Vietnam in 2019
The more they talked, the more Thuy felt the sincerity of the Belgian guy. Finally, after many times of persuading Thuy, around the end of 2019, Cheo flew to Vietnam for the first meeting, which was also Thuy's birthday. At that time, Thuy was still working in Ho Chi Minh City and had not returned to her hometown in Dak Lak.
"Cheo in real life is exactly like Thuy imagined, so the two became close very quickly."
The visit lasted 3 months. The couple took the opportunity to travel to several places and experience Vietnamese culture during the year-end festivals. Cheo had a very good impression of Vietnamese food and people right from the first trip.
Long distance love in Covid-19 times
After Cheo returned home, the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, so the couple had a long-distance relationship for more than 2 years.
“As the epidemic situation becomes more and more tense, we are both mentally prepared that we might have to wait for each other for a long time. We hope to see each other again soon and are not discouraged. As long as we are both healthy, we are at ease,” Thuy said.
Thuy remembers that every time the epidemic situation improved, both of them were very happy. Cheo kept updated with information from the embassy, and flew to Vietnam as soon as it opened. He even joked with Thuy: "If you keep asking, the people at the embassy will probably remember my face."
During more than 2 years of long distance relationship, Thuy and Cheo talked to each other every day.
During more than 2 years of long-distance relationship, the couple talked every day through the phone screen. Both of them "enjoyed" each other's stories. Cheo loved listening to Thuy's stories and vice versa. They shared almost everything with each other, without hiding anything. Therefore, the couple was confident that they understood each other very well even though they had only met once.
“We agree on a specific time to video call every day. Cheo usually calls Thuy on time. Whenever he is busy, Cheo always tells Thuy in advance so she doesn’t have to wait, but sometimes, due to objective reasons, Cheo calls a little later.
Thuy was worried and got a little angry, but never got angry in a silent way, not talking to each other.
At the end of May 2022, when Vietnam reopened after the Covid-19 pandemic, Cheo immediately returned to Vietnam for the second time to meet his girlfriend. This time, the couple decided to register their marriage right away. Nearly a year later, they held a wedding ceremony with the presence of both families.
In August 2023, Thuy went to Belgium to visit her husband's family. Last June, the couple celebrated their 2nd wedding anniversary.
After nearly 1 year of marriage registration, the couple got married.
Belgian son-in-law is not afraid of farming
Currently, Thuy-Cheo and her husband live in Dak Lak. Thuy produces content to post on social media channels. Her videos documenting the peaceful and sweet life of the couple are admired by many people.
Meanwhile, Cheo has his own garden to indulge in his favorite farming work.
“Cheo is very passionate about gardening. He is investing time in studying and improving himself to pursue farming. Cheo loves freedom and nature, so farming is very much his style. Although he has never done such heavy manual work before, Cheo is very hard-working and not afraid of mud,” Thuy said.
Cheo likes farming in his wife's hometown.
Thuy shared that her father could not bear to let his son-in-law go to the fields because he was worried that the work was too hard. Cheo knew that, so every day he told his father in law to invite him to go to the fields. Whatever his father-in-law did, Cheo would ask to join him. Every day when he came home from work, Cheo's hands and feet were dirty and sweaty, but her mouth always had a bright smile.
He often joked with Thuy, "Going to the fields is like I get to play with trees and leaves, and I get to exercise at the same time." Thuy felt that Cheo really loved this job.
She shared that she was also worried that Cheo would have difficulty adapting to life in Vietnam.
When they first met, Thuy lived in a very ordinary rented room in the city, while Cheo had always been accustomed to a much more comfortable and comfortable life. However, when they met, all of Thuy's worries disappeared.
Cheo adapted very quickly to life in Vietnam.
Cheo is surprisingly simple and adapts very quickly to everything. Whatever Thuy eats, Cheo eats. Whatever Thuy does, Cheo does with her. Cheo also rarely shops or spends money.
“I see that Cheo’s happiness and enjoyment of life is very simple, not coming from owning expensive things or a luxurious appearance. Cheo does not set any standards for Thuy. Cheo loves Thuy for who she is and always encourages Thuy to be herself.”
Thuy said that when she was with Cheo, she always felt comfortable and at ease. She felt her husband's sincerity not only for her, but also for everyone around her, her family members.
Currently, both are very satisfied with life in Vietnam.
