Exploiting potential and advantages

Among the strengths brought by the sea, KTTS has long affirmed its position, role, and made great contributions to the socio -economic development of the province. Currently, the whole province has more than 5,253 KTTS vessels, with a total capacity of 808,604 KW, of which 1,682 vessels are over 15 m long, 100% of which have installed voyage monitoring equipment (VMS). The total output of exploited and farmed aquatic products in the first 9 months of this year is estimated at 907,186 tons, equal to 71.5% of the plan, up 5.9% over the same period.

In addition to coastal exploitation and aquaculture, Ca Mau is hoping to become an important maritime logistics center of the region. Recently, the Hon Khoai dual-use general port project has been started. As a deep-water port, receiving large-tonnage ships, when put into operation, Hon Khoai port will create a new export gateway for goods from the Mekong Delta, especially agricultural and aquatic products. Instead of having to transport long distances to seaports in the Southeast, goods will be gathered and exported directly from Ca Mau, helping to shorten time and reduce logistics costs.

In addition to abundant resources for exploitation, Ca Mau sea area also has great potential for renewable energy development.

Mr. To Hoai Phuong, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, said: “In recent times, the province has focused all resources on investing in fishing ports, storm shelters and infrastructure to exploit the potential and advantages of the sea associated with green growth, circular economy and digital economy. The goal is to turn Ca Mau into a strong maritime locality, making breakthroughs in marine economic sectors, especially fisheries, tourism, renewable energy and maritime; having a synchronous and modern infrastructure system, conveniently connected with localities in the region, the whole country and internationally”.

Along with seaports, the province is also investing heavily in fisheries logistics services, warehouses and inland connecting routes. This helps to form a complete supply chain, from purchasing, processing to transportation and export, creating higher added value for products. In addition, islands such as Hon Chuoi are being developed into logistics service points, safe shelters for ships, thereby creating a widespread support network, helping exploitation and maritime transport activities to be safer and more effective.

Effective and sustainable strategy

According to Mr. To Hoai Phuong, currently Ca Mau is not focusing on increasing exploitation output, but is shifting to controlled exploitation, coupled with conservation. Along with that, promoting the development of aquaculture as an effective alternative solution. The province not only expands farming area but also focuses on applying high technology, improving product quality to serve domestic consumption and export.

In particular, encouraging the conversion of destructive fishing practices to environmentally friendly methods to protect fisheries, maintain the balance of marine ecosystems and ensure long-term livelihoods for fishing communities. The fisheries sector is applying technology to monitor and manage fishing vessels and fishing areas, helping to optimize efficiency and minimize risks; fishing activities are more tightly planned, avoiding overfishing and IUU violations.

The province has established a marine protected area to preserve marine biodiversity in association with marine economic development. Many dynamic projects have been implemented, especially wind power projects, making an important contribution to economic growth, ensuring energy security, adapting to climate change and protecting the environment.

In the draft documents of the 1st Provincial Party Congress, term 2025-2030, the province determined the planning for marine economic development (on the islands of Hon Khoai, Hon Chuoi, Hon Da Bac and coastal communes and wards...) in the direction of investing in effective and sustainable marine exploitation, associated with protecting aquatic resources; modernizing the offshore fishing fleet, associated with developing fishing logistics services; selectively developing marine aquaculture in suitable areas.

Strongly invest in developing onshore and offshore wind power, linked to electricity export. Gradually exploit Hon Khoai Seaport effectively, linked to urban, industrial and service development planning in Dat Mui area. Develop tourism, exploit the unique landscape, historical and ecological values, linked to resource conservation and ensuring national defense and security. Prioritize selective investment, suitable to the function of each island, alluvial land, sea encroachment area..., forming unique tourism products combining discovery experiences, traditional education, marine and island ecotourism.

With strategic steps, Ca Mau is determined to get rich from the sea and hopes to build a new position: Logistics center, an indispensable link in Vietnam's global supply chain. This is the vision to make Ca Mau a connecting center, strongly contributing to the overall development of the entire Mekong Delta region./.
