On October 30th, the People's Committee of Phung Hiep district, Hau Giang province, held its first ever "Fishing with a Trawl During the Flood Season" competition in 2023. The competition aimed to raise awareness and educate people about the importance of fishing in conjunction with the conservation of aquatic resources in rice fields.

The competition involved 16 teams from 15 communes and towns in the district. Within a 120-minute timeframe on a nearly 2-hectare flooded field, the team that caught the most fish would win.

Most of the participants in the competition were farmers who made a living by using fishing rods to catch fish in the flooded rice paddies during the rainy season. The tools used for catching fish were the familiar fishing rods used by the local people.

Mr. Tran Khong Dan, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Phung Hiep district, said that the competition contributes to preserving the traditional fishing industry in the locality, along with raising people's awareness that fishing must be linked to protecting aquatic resources. In the coming years, the district will develop the model into an experiential tourism form for tourists to visit and explore when the flood season arrives.
