On September 10th, Xinhua News Agency published a letter that Chinese President Xi Jinping wrote more than 20 years ago to his middle school literature teacher to express his gratitude after receiving a book she sent him as a gift.
This letter was written by Xi Jinping while he was serving as Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Acting Governor of Fujian Province.
"Ms. Tran: Hello! I received your letter. Thank you for giving me the children's literature book, and I am deeply impressed to know that even after retirement, you are still diligently contributing... I will never forget your kindness."
In the letter, he also expressed his respect for the teaching profession, emphasizing that respecting teachers is a national tradition, and quoting the words of the late Chinese leader Mao Zedong to his teacher Xu Teli: "You were my teacher before, you are still my teacher now, and you will always be my teacher in the future."
According to Ms. Tran, every time Mr. Xi returned to Beijing for work, he always made time to visit his old teachers.
He also shared: "My teachers taught me so much; I still remember their appearances clearly. They not only imparted knowledge but also taught me moral values, which have benefited me throughout my life."
When presenting the award to Ms. Zhang Guimei – who spearheaded the establishment of the country's first free girls' high school – President Xi praised her for "dedicating herself to the cause of education and poverty alleviation, and for igniting hope for girls in mountainous areas."
At a rural primary school in Chongqing, Xi Jinping also praised the teachers who have stayed there: "I hope to see a team of teachers like this, dedicated to the countryside, nurturing an outstanding generation of children for the country. The work you do is very meaningful."
Recently, eight teachers from a special rural education program, who had previously been honored as "Outstanding Teachers Nationwide," sent a letter to General Secretary Xi Jinping to report on their work, share their teaching experiences, and express their determination to dedicate themselves to rural education.
In his reply letter on September 8-9, the Chinese leader once again emphasized that education is a vital national matter, with teachers being the root of it all.
"I hope you will continue to maintain your dedication to the cause of education, constantly improve your teaching and training abilities, care for and guide children to grow up healthy with all your heart, and strive to cultivate more people who will build and inherit socialism, developing comprehensively in morality, intellect, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor skills, to contribute to the revitalization of rural areas and the building of a strong educational nation," he wrote.
