The June 2nd accident was the third deadliest railway disaster in Indian history and the most serious since 1995, when two high-speed trains collided, killing more than 300 people.
According to AFP, the accident occurred when a high-speed train traveling from south to north, from Bengaluru (Karnataka state) to Kolkata (West Bengal state), derailed in Balasore district, Odisha state, with several carriages falling near the north-south tracks. Minutes later, another train traveling from north to south, from Kolkata to Chennai (Tamil Nadu state), collided with the derailed train, with several carriages crashing into a nearby parked freight train.
Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force and the Air Force were deployed to the scene while the Ministry of Railways launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. All hospitals in the area are receiving victims, and 200 ambulances, plus buses, have been dispatched to transport the injured to hospitals.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered his condolences to the families of the victims and will visit the scene and hospitals on June 3rd.
