There are some basic wedding dress codes that you need to know, as well as how to choose the right outfit so you don't have to rush out to shop when everything is already in your closet.

Black tie events are typically formal and take place in the evening. These events are usually quite simple for men, consisting primarily of a dark tuxedo, white shirt, and possibly a bow tie. Some less formal events will only require a vest and tie. Dress shoes, such as oxfords, are appropriate.
For women, there are more options, but the most important criteria are neatness and elegance. This is not the time to try out the latest or boldest trends. Choose a dress that is floor-length, or at least knee-length. These dresses should be classic, feminine, and in neutral colors.
You can complete the look with fine jewelry, a clutch, and high heels. For women, hair can be pulled back into a bun or styled if left loose. Smokey eye makeup or bold lip colors are also suitable for black tie events.

This is the most formal wedding attire possible, equivalent to state dinners or royal events.
Women should wear formal, floor-length evening gowns, along with jewelry, high heels, and an elegant clutch.
Men should wear a tailcoat, formal white shirt, vest, bow tie, white or grey gloves and formal shoes, such as derby shoes or oxfords.

Not all weddings require black tie. Weddings have become much more casual lately, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. In wedding dress codes, cocktail attire falls between formal and casual. Men can wear suits with or without ties. Women wear cocktail dresses.
For cocktail events, you don’t have to play it safe. Feel free to experiment with bold necklines, cutouts, or embellishments. You can wear separates instead of one-piece dresses.
With shoes, you can also experiment with different colors and styles. Jewelry and hairstyles will also be more liberal, unique and outstanding, depending on your personality.
Casual wear

For more informal events like garden weddings, dress casually. Men can wear a shirt and slacks, or for a less formal occasion, a polo shirt and shorts.
Strapless outfits, whether dresses or skirts, are great for women. However, keep it understated to avoid being too sexy. Wear a straight dress and flat shoes or sandals. Hair and makeup can be neutral, and accessories minimal. The key to casual wear is comfort.
Festival costumes

This dress code is relatively new and will confuse many guests. Simply put, festive attire allows you to have fun and be completely comfortable with your appearance. Women are encouraged to wear cocktail attire that features bold colors, playful accessories, and unique styles. Men should wear a suit with a pattern or design, and stand out with a bright tie or creative pocket square.
Themed costumes
For themed events, guests should dress according to specific requests from the couple. Avoid intentionally wearing unsolicited clothing to stand out, as this is inappropriate for themed events.
