PARENTS STAY AWAKE ALL NIGHT WAITING FOR INFORMATION
Hanoi announced the results of the 10th grade entrance exam late in the afternoon. After learning the scores, many parents whose children's scores were "on the edge" compared to the previous year spent sleepless nights. The hottest topic on parent groups in Hanoi from the afternoon of June 29th until now has been the "cut-off score," and whether their children passed or failed.
Parents in Hanoi anxiously waited for their children outside the 10th-grade exam rooms. Now they are anxiously awaiting information on the cut-off scores.
While Ho Chi Minh City announced the score distribution and analyzed the scores for each subject immediately after the announcement of the 10th grade entrance exam results, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has yet to take any action on this matter. When a Thanh Nien reporter raised the issue, a leader of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training stated that any analysis of this year's exam scores, if any, would only be conducted and announced after the cut-off scores were released because the Department is "too busy" with grading the high school graduation exams.
Ms. TQ, whose child took the entrance exam for Phan Dinh Phung High School, said that compared to last year's cutoff score, her child was 0.25 points short. "Heartbroken" and "unable to sleep" were Ms. Q's comments after learning her child's exam results. She scoured all parent and student groups in Hanoi to get information and analysis of the exam scores. She asked anyone who claimed to have data on the scores to predict her child's chances of passing or failing.
"Some parents in the groups didn't understand how the Department of Education and Training had access to the exam score data, so I asked them to check where my child's score ranked among the students who registered for their first choice at the school. From there, I compared it to the school's quota for this year to make an estimate," Ms. Q shared, adding that according to this data, her child had enough points to pass. However, because this is an unofficial source of information, she couldn't be sure until the Department of Education and Training officially announced the cut-off scores.
Hundreds of parents whose children scored at or slightly below last year's cutoff point share the same sentiment as Ms. Q.: on one hand, they are eagerly awaiting news of the cutoff scores, but on the other hand, they are also researching the admission process and quality of private schools to have a backup plan.
On the private group "Accompanying Excellent Students…" with over 150,000 members, the group's admin, based on provided exam score data, has compiled statistics and predictions about this year's cutoff scores. A quick statistical analysis of Hanoi's 10th-grade entrance exam scores, provided by this group, suggests that the total admission score this year may decrease slightly compared to last year. Therefore, it is expected that the average cutoff score for both specialized and non-specialized programs in most schools will decrease slightly or remain the same, rather than increase.
LITERATURE SCORES INCREASED BUT MATH AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE SCORES DECREASE SLIGHTLY?
According to a leader of Chu Van An Secondary School (Tay Ho District), the overall prediction is that the cut-off scores may decrease slightly by 0.25 - 0.5 points depending on the school because while the scores in Literature have increased, the scores in Mathematics and Foreign Languages tend to decrease.
Similarly, the principal of a junior high school in Dong Da District predicted that this year's cutoff scores would decrease slightly. Based on the exam questions and the results of the students they teach, many math and foreign language teachers believe that the scores for these two subjects will be slightly lower this year compared to last year because the exam questions were better designed to differentiate between students' abilities.
Regarding this year's exam, Mr. Tran Manh Tung, a math tutor with many years of experience in Hanoi, predicts that the average score will be around 7 points. Average students could score 5-7 points, above-average students 7-8 points, and excellent students 8-9 points. Therefore, according to Mr. Tung, the score distribution and cut-off scores this year will not change significantly.
Meanwhile, the principal of a top-tier school commented that while exam scores are similar to last year, the cut-off scores for top schools will decrease because the number of specialized classes in these schools has increased, and most of the high-achieving students have already taken the specialized entrance exams.
Since the Department of Education and Training did not analyze exam scores this year, parents' predictions of the cutoff scores were based solely on last year's scores. In 2023, the cutoff scores for 10th grade in many schools in Hanoi increased compared to 2022. The school with the highest cutoff score was Chu Van An High School with 44.5 points. The cutoff scores for 10th grade in other schools were as follows: Kim Lien High School 43.25 points; Viet Duc High School 43 points; Phan Dinh Phung High School 42.75 points; Le Quy Don High School - Ha Dong and Yen Hoa High School both 42.25 points. Notably, top-tier schools or newly established schools, considered safe backup options, also saw increased competition and significantly higher cutoff scores. In 2023, Khuong Ha High School had the highest competition ratio in the city at 1/3.55, with a cutoff score of 37.5, 3 points higher than in 2022. Trung Van High School's cutoff score in 2022 was 34.25 points, and in 2023 it rose to 37.75 points, an increase of 3.5 points.
Opinions suggest that the cut-off scores each year, in addition to depending on the exam questions and the competition ratio, also depend on other factors such as: the quality of the students taking the exam each year, and the sudden increase or decrease in the competition ratio of each school. This year, the competition ratio for high schools in Hanoi did not have many surprising factors; the schools that previously had the highest cut-off scores are still those with intense competition, and the assigned quotas have not increased or decreased significantly compared to the previous year. Although some schools are not in the top 10 schools with the highest competition ratio, according to experts, this is competition among the best students, so the pressure on cut-off scores will not decrease.
The Hanoi Department of Education and Training will hold a meeting on July 1st to review and approve the cut-off scores for admission to specialized and non-specialized high schools.
ADVANCE THE DATE FOR ANNOUNCING ADMISSION SCORES AND ENROLLMENT TIMES.
According to the new plan from the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, the schedule for the meeting and announcement of admission scores has been adjusted due to the announcement of exam results being moved up four days earlier than expected. Specifically, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training announced that it will hold a meeting to review the admission scores for 10th grade in specialized and non-specialized high schools on July 1st. From July 1st to 4th, the admission scores for each school will be announced. On July 5th, junior high schools must complete sending out result slips to students. Before 11:00 AM on July 5th, high schools will announce the list of 10th grade admission results at their schools.
Students who have achieved the required admission scores need to complete the enrollment confirmation procedures with the high school they have been admitted to. According to the regulations of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, the time for completing the enrollment confirmation procedures online or in person at the high school is from 1 PM on July 5th to the end of July 7th. Students who confirm their enrollment online through the system need to print out the enrollment confirmation document.
From July 3rd to 8th, junior high schools will receive applications for exam score review from students (if any). On July 10th, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training will hold a meeting to approve supplementary admission scores for both specialized and non-specialized high schools (if any). From July 12th to 15th, students admitted through the supplementary admission process will complete the enrollment procedures. On July 25th, the review results will be available, followed by processing of student records and enrollment (if any). This process will conclude on July 29th.
Ho Chi Minh City announces the cut-off scores for 10th grade on July 3rd.
On June 30, Mr. Le Hoai Nam, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, said that the Department will announce the cutoff scores for 10th grade on July 3, about a week earlier than expected.
This year's 10th grade entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City had approximately 98,400 candidates taking the exam over two days, June 6-7. On June 20, the Department of Education and Training announced the 10th grade exam results, and on June 24, it announced the cutoff scores for specialized and integrated classes.
This year, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training will announce the cut-off scores for regular 10th grade classes on July 3rd.

Whether your child passes or fails, it's still very important.
the parents' handshake that leads them forward.
Whether your child passes or fails, whether it's a surprise or a shock, parents need to remain calm to support their child and plan for choosing a suitable school. This is when children are most vulnerable and need encouragement, guidance, and the hand of their parents to move forward. Don't let your own unmet expectations cause your children stress and low self-esteem. Their future doesn't depend solely on this one exam, and their education isn't limited to public or specialized high schools, so don't put too much emphasis on passing or failing to get into a public school.
