On September 16th, the G77 Summit and China concluded successfully. During the two-day summit, nearly 120 speeches were delivered by leaders from the G77 member states and China, the UN Secretary-General, and representatives from many important international organizations.
The leaders unanimously adopted the Havana Declaration on “Current Development Challenges: The Role of Science , Technology and Innovation” , achieving common understanding and consensus on several key issues.
Firstly , it calls for the establishment of a new world economic order, strengthening the voice of the Southern countries, and promoting reforms to the global economic and financial governance system to make it more inclusive, efficient, and comprehensive.
Secondly , it emphasizes the crucial role of science, technology, and innovation as both drivers and catalysts for inclusive growth, addressing the challenges of climate change, and fully implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Promoting an open and equitable environment for the development of science and technology, prioritizing technology transfer to developing countries, focusing on digital cooperation, and narrowing the digital divide.
Thirdly, strengthen North-South cooperation on development finance; promote South-South cooperation, tripartite models, and new cooperation mechanisms in the fields of science, technology, and innovation.
Notably, the Conference unanimously supported the initiative of the Cuban Presidency to designate September 16th as the annual Day of Science, Technology and Innovation for the Southern Countries.
As a founding member of the Group, Vietnam has actively participated and made responsible contributions to the G77 agenda, helping to resolve regional and international issues and enhance the voice of developing countries.
Speaking at this summit, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha extended his congratulations and highly appreciated the role and responsible contributions of fraternal Cuba in its capacity as Chair of the G77 Group and China in 2023, contributing to making the Group's agenda increasingly substantive and closely aligned with the development requirements of the Southeast Asian countries.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that the message is that science, technology, and innovation are key to solving global challenges, and that the "vaccine" for global problems is international cooperation, solidarity, and science and technology.
Drawing on Vietnam's development practices and experiences, the Deputy Prime Minister proposed important solutions to promote the building of foundations for cooperation in science, technology, and innovation among the Southern countries, aiming to successfully achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The Deputy Prime Minister's remarks were shared and highly appreciated by many countries.
The full text of the speech was broadcast on Cuban national television, contributing to the widespread dissemination of Vietnam's important messages to the people of our brotherly country, Cuba.
The first G77 summit between the Group of 77 and China was assessed as having significant influence on developing countries, attracting the participation of numerous leaders from countries and international organizations, demonstrating the growing interest of developing countries in Southern cooperation mechanisms, including the G77.
The conference contributed to creating further momentum for cooperation among developing countries, especially in science, technology, and innovation in the current new global context.
Cuba, as the presiding country, successfully hosted the Conference, contributing to enhancing its international standing, mobilizing solidarity, and garnering support from Southern countries on international issues.
The agenda items of the Conference will contribute to the High-Level Week of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, taking place from September 19-26 in New York, USA.
