More than 24,000 trees in Hanoi were broken and damaged by storm No. 3.

This morning (September 9), Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Hoang Hiep - Chairman of the Disaster Risk Reduction Partnership shared information with international organizations in Vietnam and the press about storm No. 3 (Yagi) that just made landfall in the northern provinces last weekend.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Hiep assessed: “Storm No. 3 is a storm that has increased in intensity very quickly and when it made landfall in Quang Ninh and Hai Phong provinces, it took about 5 hours, the longest compared to previous storms, so it caused very heavy damage. Usually, previous storms weaken very quickly when they make landfall, but with storm No. 3, it is completely the opposite, the level, scope of influence, and level of the storm are still very strong when they make landfall. The devastation of storm No. 3 in Quang Ninh and Hai Phong is beyond imagination and is no different from a blockbuster movie.”

According to Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Hiep, as of 6:00 a.m. on September 9, storm No. 3 had killed 24 people, injured 250 people and had thousands of houses blown off their roofs or collapsed: “After inspection, the number of trees in Ha Long City (Quang Ninh) that were knocked down was very large, currently only 10% compared to before storm No. 3 made landfall. In Hanoi, about 24,000 trees were recorded to have fallen. Electricity, telecommunications and water infrastructure were all destroyed. Storm No. 3 also damaged nearly 1 million hectares of forest. Currently, the authorities continue to count, prune and replant to minimize the risk of forest fires in the coming time. The storm also affected over 100,000 hectares of rice, fruit trees were also severely affected, of which 100% of people's banana acreage was almost wiped out”.

According to Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Hiep, the consequences of storm No. 3 are not the most worrying thing at the moment. Instead, the storm's circulation is causing very heavy rain in the Northern Midlands and Mountains: "Most worryingly, the storm's circulation will cause heavy rain, floods, landslides, and the division of mountainous areas."

Specifically, on September 8, some places measured rainfall of over 700mm, of which, Lang Son, Yen Bai, Lao Cai, Thai Nguyen had rainfall twice as high in 1 month compared to the same period in September of previous years. Currently, the water level in the rivers is rising very quickly. The warning has been raised to alert level 3. Currently, many northern mountainous provinces are facing floods, with a very high risk of affecting the dikes. On September 8, heavy rain caused landslides in Sa Pa (Lao Cai) and Da Bac (Hoa Binh), killing 9 people.

According to the report of the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, as of 6:00 a.m. on September 9, storm No. 3 and floods have left 26 people dead and missing. 247 people were injured.

Causing 113,593 hectares of rice to be flooded and damaged; 22,047 hectares of crops to be flooded and damaged; 6,887 hectares of fruit trees to be damaged; 121,668 trees to be broken.

Over 1,500 aquaculture cages were damaged and swept away; 79 livestock and 190,131 poultry were lost. 25 boats of various types sank at their anchorages in Quang Ninh. Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Hai Duong, and Hanoi suffered widespread power and communication outages.

Due to the long duration of the storm and the sustained intensity of the storm, very strong gusts of wind damaged 9,851 houses; 12 500kV power lines, 36 220kV power lines, 161 110kV power lines and many low-voltage power poles were broken; many shops, offices, schools had their roofs blown off or were damaged; many advertising signs, telecommunications poles, and mobile broadcasting stations were broken; urban trees were uprooted and broken along the roads in the provinces and cities of Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Hai Duong, Hanoi, etc. Localities are continuing to review and count the damage.

Rainfall recorded from 7:00 p.m. September 8 to 7:00 a.m. September 9: The northern mountainous region had heavy to very heavy rain, with rainfall ranging from 80-150mm, with some stations having heavier rain such as: Yen Do (Thai Nguyen) 281mm; Phu Tien (Thai Nguyen) 226mm; An Lac (Yen Bai) 245mm; Tan Phuong 1 (Yen Bai) 259mm; Viet Tien (Lao Cai) 202mm.

Rain from 7:00 a.m. September 7 to 7:00 a.m. September 9: The Northern region and Thanh Hoa have heavy to very heavy rain, with total rainfall ranging from 200-300mm, with some major rain stations as follows: Vang Danh (Quang Ninh) 346mm; Hon Dau (Hai Phong) 291mm; Phu Duc (Thai Binh) 446mm; Ky Son (Hoa Binh) 387mm; Thuong Cat (Hanoi) 271mm; Nam Xay Luong (Lao Cai) 712mm; Pu Danh (Son La) 549mm; Phinh Ho (Yen Bai) 476mm, Yen Do (Thai Nguyen) 531mm.

Forecast, in the Northwest region, on the day and night of September 9, there will be 50-100mm of rain, some places over 200mm; on the day and night of September 10, there will be 40-70mm of rain, some places over 100mm.

In the Northeast region and Thanh Hoa, during the day and night of September 9, mountainous and midland areas will have 50-90mm of rain, in some places over 150mm, in the Northern Delta region and Thanh Hoa there will be 20-40mm of rain, in some places over 100mm; during the day and night of September 10, there will be 40-80mm of rain, in some places over 120mm.
