Towards sustainable crop production

DNVN - Speaking at the conference to deploy the Project "Improving soil health and plant nutrition management to 2030, vision to 2050", on the morning of October 18, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Hoang Trung emphasized that it is necessary to put the project into practice to move towards sustainable crop production.

Speaking at the Project "Improving soil health and plant nutrition management to 2030, vision to 2050", Deputy Minister Hoang Trung said that on October 11, 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development officially approved the Project "Improving soil health and plant nutrition management to 2030, vision to 2050".

The project was born with the goal and expectation of helping to stabilize and improve the health of cultivated land on the basis of effective plant nutrient management to limit soil degradation. At the same time, it increases the added value per unit area of cultivated land, contributing to the development of green, sustainable, low-carbon agriculture and adaptation to climate change.

The project clearly identifies the role of soil management and plant nutrition in preventing soil degradation, developing organic agriculture and mitigating the impact of climate change. The project aims to increase land use value and effectively manage plant nutrition, thereby contributing to the restructuring of the agricultural sector and the construction of new rural areas.

Since June 25, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has held a conference to present the current situation and solutions for agricultural land. Many problems arising in practice have been discussed.

Deputy Minister Hoang Trung spoke at the conference.

"The task of today's conference is to clearly understand the content that needs to be done in the coming time. The agencies of the ministry will also listen carefully to the content, to know who is doing what, and what is their responsibility. What needs to be done to bring the project into life, we really hope to hear many opinions from the central to local levels," said Mr. Trung.

Sharing at the event, Mr. Vu Thang - Deputy Head of Fertilizer Management Department, Plant Protection Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development emphasized the importance of the community in managing soil health and plant nutrition. Therefore, the project promotes programs and training materials on soil health and fertilizer use instructions to improve the capacity of management and technical staff.

“In addition to building a network of technical staff to serve the work of improving soil health and plant nutrition management, it is necessary to promote to receive the attention of the community and the participation, coordination and support of experts, scientists and manufacturers,” Mr. Thang recommended.

According to Mr. Nguyen Quang Tin - Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, to have a database on cultivated land, it is necessary to systematize and complete the research. Research institutes and agencies participating in the project need to join hands to complete the database.

“Regarding soil quality and soil health in general, Vietnam currently does not have much data. Each crop and each land area must have specific numbers to be used, in the context of climate change. On the other hand, Vietnam is firmly on the path of organic agriculture and agriculture that reduces greenhouse gas emissions, so it is even more necessary to have soil data,” said Mr. Tin.

According to Mr. Tin, one of the weaknesses of land is that our country does not have an application (app) for land data, output as well as input. Almost every year there are research projects on land and fertilizer, but they are still scattered.

There needs to be coordinated, large-scale programs such as research on rice varieties and crop varieties. This requires future soil research to change and have more systematic investment.
