Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton escaped a serious accident at the United States Sprint Grand Prix when debris from the crash flew straight into the cockpit, but was fortunately stopped perfectly by his Halo safety device.
Specifically, Lewis Hamilton was following closely behind Oscar Piastri and Nico Hulkenberg when the two leading drivers collided at the first corner.
The incident quickly escalated, sending both Piastri and Hulkenberg into a collision with two other drivers, Fernando Alonso and Lando Norris, creating a shower of debris from the cars.
One of these carbon fiber fragments was recorded flying straight towards Hamilton's helmet.
Fortunately, the Halo device - a carbon cockpit guard - acted as a shield. The debris bounced off the guard, allowing Hamilton to continue the race. The 40-year-old Ferrari driver later finished fourth to earn five points.

Speaking after the race, Hamilton said he managed to avoid the initial chaos: "I managed to avoid the accident in Turn 1, just barely. I saw Alonso on the inside so I steered a little to the right and accidentally opened the door for Charles (Leclerc)."
Hamilton was pleased with Ferrari's performance: "The fact that we finished third and fifth (with Leclerc) was a real step forward. This is the closest I've been to a podium in a long time. I'll give everything to get there. My goal is to win."
The ensuing events forced McLaren drivers Norris and Piastri to retire, but their McLaren team soon celebrated winning the Constructors' Championship.
At the end of the day, Max Verstappen took pole position. Other notable positions included Norris in second, Leclerc in third, and Hamilton in fifth.
