Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí09/02/2025

(Dan Tri) - US President Donald Trump is actively preparing for a plan to streamline and eventually eliminate the US Departmentof Education , as part of a plan to reduce the size of the US government to save the state budget.

The plan to abolish the US Department of Education began when US President Donald Trump asked his nominee for Secretary of Education - Ms. Linda McMahon - to carry out a plan to streamline the staff. Whether or not the Department of Education will actually be abolished depends on the approval of the US Congress .

In an official statement sent to the US media by the White House this week, US President Donald Trump has set the first task for his nominee for Secretary of Education: to promote the plan to cut the US Department of Education's staff.

During his campaign, Mr. Trump mentioned that he would abolish the Department of Education. In fact, in the nearly 5 decades of the US Department of Education’s existence, the effectiveness of this agency has been a topic of debate among US politicians . There are politicians who believe that the US Department of Education’s operations are ineffective and cause waste of budget.

However, in reality, the US Department of Education is operating programs that are considered quite important for education in this country. These are financial aid programs for public schools that have difficulty in financial autonomy, or programs to support poor students who borrow money to cover tuition fees at university level.

The U.S. Department of Education receives about $79 billion in funding each year. Earlier this month, the Office of Personnel Management, the U.S. government’s human resources agency, issued a notice of President Trump’s new directive to the more than 2 million federal employees.

Accordingly, Mr. Trump mentioned paying high salaries to officials who intend to quit as a way to support the policy of streamlining the US government. Those who register to quit before February 6 will receive salaries and benefits from the time of submitting their resignation until September 30.

This is part of the Trump administration's effort to cut the size of the US government and save the state budget, with the goal of saving up to 100 billion USD.

The Department of Education is also being directed to this direction. Secretary of Education nominee Linda McMahon is expected to soon release a detailed plan for streamlining the department, as well as how the department will continue to perform or transfer important tasks to other departments after the department is downsized or even eliminated.
