How to give lucky money (lì xì) tactfully during Tet, so that it pleases the children without offending the adults?

This is a post shared by Sữa Đậu's father, an author who specializes in writing about parenting on a Chinese social media platform.

Hello everyone, I'm Soy Milk's dad.

When it comes to Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year), we undoubtedly have countless topics to discuss. Xiao Fei has a cousin who is notoriously stingy and calculating. Normally, you never see her around, and she never goes out with friends. But when Tet comes, you run into her everywhere. The reason is quite simple.

She has two children, so every Tet holiday she "takes advantage" of the situation to earn some extra money. If it's someone else's family with two children, she'll give each child 100,000 VND as a New Year's gift. But if the family only has one child, she'll "generously" give 500,000 VND so that the other family can give 500,000 VND to each of her two children.

She's not only opportunistic but also very calculating. Every year during Tet (Lunar New Year), she quickly pulls out an envelope and slips it into a child's hand as a New Year's gift. When the child opens it, they find out it's actually 500,000 VND. My family has one child, and hers has two. Every year this happens, and my wife doesn't know how to handle it.

Giving each child 500,000 VND as a New Year's gift is quite a strain on the wallet. Clearly, I see nice clothes and good cosmetics but I don't dare buy them, so why do I have to encounter someone so stingy?

Despite thinking that way, my wife still gave each of her two children 500,000 VND as a New Year's gift. She was afraid people would think she was stingy. This is also something that makes my wife uncomfortable.

We sometimes wonder why giving lucky money during Tet is such a headache?

It means giving lucky money to children.

Giving lucky money (lì xì) is believed to ward off evil spirits and bring peace.

According to ancient Chinese legend, a long time ago there was a demon. Every New Year's Eve, this demon would appear to scare children. Anyone who encountered it would contract a strange illness. In severe cases, they would become mentally incapacitated. To protect the children, adults would stay awake and watch over them on New Year's Eve every year. As long as they stayed awake until morning, nothing bad would happen.

But once, a family, having worked hard all day, neglected to stay awake to protect their child that night. Taking advantage of this opportunity, the demon sneaked into the house. In that critical moment, a glittering object placed beside the child's pillow frightened the demon away.

This glittering object is a red paper envelope containing eight sealed coins.

From then on, people placed these red paper envelopes under pillows to protect children from the monster. These red paper envelopes are now known as lucky money envelopes.

Behavior of parents with high EQ

As times change, giving lucky money has become a blessing and a wish from adults to children. It's a hope that the children will celebrate Tet (Lunar New Year) with renewed spirit, safety, and good health.

However, nowadays, the calculating nature of giving money to children has distorted the meaning of giving them money as a New Year's gift. Not only has the amount of money become a measure of adults' affection, but it has also become an opportunity for calculation and financial gain.

In fact, many mothers have faced this situation. I once spoke with a mother about this issue. She also has a child, and every year during Tet (Lunar New Year), she faces a lot of headaches. Finally, she came up with a solution that many people agree with.

The amount of lucky money you give depends on your family's financial situation . If your family is well-off, then you can give more than the other family. For example, if they give you 500,000 VND, you should give an additional 100,000 VND, totaling 600,000 VND.

This way, the other party doesn't suffer any loss, and you don't feel too much pain in your wallet. Because the key is that the meaning of giving lucky money is to bring good fortune.

If your financial situation isn't very good, you can subtract a little from the total amount of money the other family gave as New Year's gifts. For example, if they gave 500,000 VND, you subtract 100,000 VND, totaling 400,000 VND. This way, each of their two children will receive an equal amount of 200,000 VND.

However, in this case, the other party might feel a little disadvantaged, but don't worry too much. We can prepare a small gift for the children such as a greeting card, a book, etc. This way, it's not only polite but also prevents them from feeling embarrassed; it's like killing two birds with one stone.
