The 0-1 defeat against Uzbekistan U23 was the main reason why Iran U23 could not top the group and was not among the four best-performing second-placed teams. The West Asian team failed to qualify for the next round.
Notably, in the aforementioned match, a player from the Uzbekistan U23 team received two yellow cards but was not sent off. Therefore, the Iranian Football Federation appealed the match result. The Asian Football Confederation has not yet responded to this matter.
Iran's U23 team failed to qualify for the 2024 AFC U23 Asian Cup.
Before the match, both U23 Iran and U23 Uzbekistan had 6 points. The winner would take first place in the group and qualify for the 2024 U23 Asian Championship finals. After 90 minutes, U23 Uzbekistan defeated the visitors 1-0 thanks to a goal from Abbosbek Fayzullaev.
The Iran U23 team was eliminated because they finished 5th among the best-performing second-placed teams. They were just behind Malaysia U23. Although they had the same goal difference, Iran U23 received more yellow cards (9 cards, while Malaysia U23 only had 4).
This is the second time the Iranian football team has failed to qualify for the U23 Asian Championship. They previously missed out on the finals in 2018. Their absence from next year's tournament in Qatar means the Iranian U23 team will be unable to compete for a spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The 2024 AFC U23 Championship will take place from April 15th to May 3rd, 2024. Sixteen teams will participate: Qatar U23 (hosts), Vietnam U23, Japan U23, South Korea U23, China U23, Australia U23, Malaysia U23, Saudi Arabia U23, Uzbekistan U23, Iraq U23, UAE U23, Jordan U23, Tajikistan U23, Thailand U23, Indonesia U23, and Kuwait U23.
Vietnam U23 secured their place in the next round the earliest and are the only team guaranteed a spot after the second matchday. Coach Philippe Troussier's team topped Group C after defeating Guam U23 and Yemen U23, and drawing with Singapore U23.
