On May 31st, Nokia Corporation announced a partnership with Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group ( VNPT ) to deploy the first 10 Gigabit per second (10 Gb/s) fiber optic broadband infrastructure in Vietnam.
The initial deployment phase will connect 10,000 households and businesses in the eight largest provinces and cities nationwide. Nokia is providing optical access nodes for VNPT's switching centers and optical modems to connect end-users' homes.
Broadband fiber optic technology is being rapidly deployed in Vietnam. In September 2021, the Ministry of Information and Communications launched the National Digital Transformation Program. This includes the goal of providing fiber optic internet infrastructure to 80% of households and 100% of communes by 2025.

According to a report on Vietnamese telecommunications network operators by Global Data. As a result , VNPT is leading the market with a 39.5% market share in 2022. Along with home internet services, VNPT also provides mobile and pay-TV services. The transition to a multi-Gigabit network infrastructure will help VNPT differentiate its services and maintain its leading position.
With this new technology, VNPT can provide customers with a full range of speed options up to 10 Gb/s on the existing infrastructure without the need for new fiber optic cable installation.
Mr. Dang Anh Son, General Director of Vietnam Network Infrastructure Corporation (VNPT-Net), stated: "This project is the beginning of our journey towards providing high-end FTTx services, meeting the higher demands for bandwidth and service quality of residential and business customers with the latest generation XGS-PON solution. Following this, VNPT will cooperate with Nokia to deploy a cloud-based network management system for the XGS-PON system and enhance customer experience through digital transformation solutions."
Mr. Rubén Morón Flores, Head of Nokia's Vietnam Market, shared: "We are proud to have been selected by VNPT as the solution provider for a significant event: the first-ever introduction of 10 Gb/s broadband to Vietnam. The Asia- Pacific (APAC) region is also the world's largest broadband fiber optic market. Our solution, utilizing multiple Gigabit-speed passive optical networks (PON), achieves impressive flexibility and scalability. Vietnam has many ambitious goals, and we are delighted to contribute to their realization."
In 2023, VNPT and Nokia signed a cooperation agreement on 5G private wireless networks and solutions for smart ports and smart airports. Under this agreement, both parties agreed to share a strategic vision for network development and business opportunities from LTE/5G private wireless networks and solutions for smart ports and smart airports. New product launches, innovations, technologies, and information on application cases that benefit airport and seaport operators have been successfully implemented. A joint working group has been established to coordinate and prepare for participation in potential projects in Vietnam, such as international airports.
