On September 13th, Ms. Dinh Thi Phuong Khanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Long An province, announced that the department had signed a memorandum of understanding with Faeger Co., Ltd. (Japan) regarding the pilot implementation of carbon credit building models from rice production using the alternating wet and dry flooding method.
Accordingly, the two sides will cooperate to support farmers in sustainable agricultural production, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and implement green transformation in the agricultural sector.
Promote plans and projects in the agricultural sector to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Long An province.
Specifically, this project will collect carbon credits and connect funding from the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) or voluntary carbon credits to support farmers in promoting green transitions, ensuring financial resources for implementing projects and measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Faeger Co., Ltd. is responsible for implementing, providing professional and technical support, and monitoring carbon credit building models from rice production using the alternating wet and dry flooding method.
Simultaneously, they will bear the costs incurred during the model testing, such as payments to participating farmers and related services, purchasing necessary materials and equipment for testing, and compensation for farmers who lose profits during the trials.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will be responsible for ensuring the infrastructure, assigning technical staff to coordinate and connect farmers in the region to implement the project.
In the initial phase, from October 2024 to July 2025, the project will conduct model trials at the Hoa Phu Agricultural Research and Service Farm in Chau Thanh district and at a household in Vinh Hung district.
Each test site covers an area of 0.5 hectares.
The project aims to support farmers in Long An province in collecting carbon credits from 100,000 hectares of rice fields using the alternating wet and dry irrigation method by 2030.
Faeger is a Japanese company specializing in supporting agricultural projects, particularly those promoting the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture.
Prior to signing this memorandum, Faeger had also signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Agricultural Extension Center, aiming to collaborate on the implementation of projects and trials across the region in Vietnam.
