"Golden Mai Charity" visits Meritorious Teacher Nguyen Van Phuc and Artist Xuan Hieu

(NLDO) – On the morning of March 24, the program “Mai Vang Nhan Ai” organized by Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper with the support of Nam A Commercial Joint Stock Bank visited Meritorious Teacher Nguyen Van Phuc and artist Xuan Hieu.

More than 50 years of perseverance with the podium

Teacher Xuan Hieu has been teaching choreography and dancing for over 50 years. Previously, he was an actor of the Southern Opera Troupe, a student of People's Artist Phuong Danh (teacher Tam Danh - PV), in the same class with artists: Cong Thanh, Tu Le, Le Thien, Ca Le Hong, Thanh Vy, Thanh Hap, Hoang Khanh...

According to Meritorious Artist Ca Le Hong, Xuan Hieu was from the North but learned to sing in a Southern accent. Sometimes he spoke in a Northern accent, sometimes he sang in a Southern accent, so everyone laughed. But because he sang so well and also used choreography to portray the role of a crane in the Cai Luong play "White Crane" that Mr. Tam Danh had taught him in the past, he became destined for the acting and choreography professions.

Despite his old age, teacher Xuan Hieu's dance moves are still skillful. He said: "When we were studying, we didn't know anything about ballet, but teacher Tam Danh taught us to dance like a white crane to look like a Vietnamese, not a swan. That is, even though the crane turns into a human, when performing, we must occasionally reveal the crane's bones with its "beak" and "wings". When the crane is injured, we must gently pat its shoulders, and when walking in pain, its legs must be pulled back and gripped onto the stage like a chicken scratching, because that is a Vietnamese crane."

Recalling his youth, artist Xuan Hieu confided that People's Artist Tam Danh imparted to his students experiences through observing nature and life. In the early years of the 20th century, Vietnamese theater did not have the conditions to approach the world theater, but People's Artist Tam Danh was able to compose a topic to teach the subject of Cai Luong. In 1966, People's Artist Tam Danh also proposed to reform Cai Luong by combining music , dance, and content to create a new form for Cai Luong. This led to a fierce debate among Cai Luong artists. Finally, everyone requested to stage an experimental play called "Fire". Before the story was settled, there was an order to evacuate to fight against the US and the reform of Cai Luong was left hanging from then on.

The stage of reformed opera is different nowadays, the number of performances is decreasing, so the number of people passing on their skills behind the scenes according to artist Xuan Hieu is decreasing. Therefore, the training method must also change. While in other countries, the 5-year curriculum is updated and changed, in our country, we still teach and learn according to an outdated curriculum that cannot keep up with the requirements of the 4.0 technology era.

Receiving support from the "Mai Vang Nhan Ai" program, he emotionally said: "I am retired and did not think that I would receive the attention of the Lao Dong Newspaper. Thank you to the "Mai Vang Nhan Ai" program for bringing joy to veteran artists and giving spiritual encouragement to the previous generation of artists."

The second artist the delegation visited was Meritorious Teacher Nguyen Van Phuc (born in 1937, former vice principal of Ho Chi Minh City College of Theater and Cinema - now Ho Chi Minh City University of Theater and Cinema).

Because he is seriously ill, his wife, Vu Thi Nam, received the support money on his behalf. She expressed her gratitude to the program for supporting and helping artists and artisans nationwide. She said that he always wished to accompany the younger generation, even though he was no longer standing on the podium, he was always interested in teaching whenever his students needed it.

The program "Golden Apricot Blossoms of Love" presented financial support to Meritorious Teacher Nguyen Van Phuc - received by Ms. Vu Thi Nam (his wife) on behalf of the family.

Meritorious teacher Nguyen Van Phuc is considered by experts to be a dedicated and talented teacher. His students are famous artists such as: Cong Ninh, Tran Canh Don, Thanh Thuy, Quyen Linh, Minh Nhi, Dai Nghia, Phu Hai, Huu Luan, Dieu Duc, Trung Dan, Cong Hau, director Minh Chung, Quang Minh, Nguyen My Khanh, Duc Thinh, Truong Giang, Van Trang...

Artist Minh Nhi said that teacher Nguyen Van Phuc studied in Bulgaria so he has good pedagogical knowledge, helping many students reach higher heights in their careers.

"Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc gave me wings, not only teaching me the profession, but also teaching me about ethics and passion for the profession when working in an artistic environment. Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc was with me for 3 years at the School of Stage Arts II, now the University of Theater and Cinema in Ho Chi Minh City" - artist Minh Nhi said.

The artist students all told each other admirable stories of teacher Nguyen Van Phuc. "He always meticulously analyzed the characters, guided students and actors to exploit the actions, psychology and put himself in the character to act realistically, with strong belief in the character's fate. Sometimes, in just a short acting class, the teacher could spend an hour explaining, making the role express the most emotion" - MC Quyen Linh once said.

He is the author of the book "The Art of Performing Arts and Cinema", published by the Writers Association Publishing House. This is the result of a painstaking process of research and practical teaching experience of a teacher who, despite his retirement, continued to teach for 19 more years, such as Meritorious Teacher Nguyen Van Phuc.
