On the morning of September 2, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health announced that Binh Duong General Hospital had successfully performed surgery to remove a "giant" skull cartilage tumor in the frontal region of a female patient, GTS, of Mong ethnicity.
Patient S. has suffered from this tumor for the past 15 years, her face is severely deformed and greatly affects her life. The tumor was discovered at the age of 7, but due to her family's financial difficulties, she was not examined and treated promptly.
The tumor started in the forehead area, gradually spreading down the face, invading the left eye socket and causing facial deformity. In mid-August 2025, with support from benefactors, she was admitted to Binh Duong General Hospital.
Clinical examination revealed a tumor measuring approximately 25 × 35 cm, fixed to the skull, immobile, with chronically inflamed overlying skin.
Imaging tests determined that this was a benign frontal cranial osteochondroma that had grown excessively, leading to severe deformity.
Recognizing this as a complicated case, Binh Duong General Hospital organized interdisciplinary consultations to find the best and safest treatment.
Primary and preventive treatment plans are established to ensure absolute safety, treatment goals include complete tumor removal, maximum function preservation, aesthetics and compliance with the patient's religious wishes.
The surgery lasted 7 hours with the participation of 6 surgeons and 3 anesthesiologists.
The team proceeded to remove the damaged skin area, remove the bone tumor up to the skull plate, reconstruct the roof of the left eye socket and cover it with a Limberg flap. Throughout the process, hemostasis was effectively controlled, no blood transfusion was required, and the patient's religious requirements were met.
After 3 days of surgery, the patient recovered well, was alert, had stable vital signs, could walk easily, and ate well. The giant tumor was completely removed, his face improved significantly, helping to improve his confidence and quality of life after 15 years of suffering.
Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health respectfully acknowledges and highly appreciates the efforts of the medical staff of Binh Duong General Hospital, especially the plastic and orthopedic surgery department.
The success of this surgery demonstrates the team of doctors and nurses' solid expertise, high determination and effective coordination between the hospital's specialties.
The efforts of the doctors not only bring recovery and happiness to the patients but also add new hope, affirming Binh Duong General Hospital as a specialized medical address in the field of complex plastic and orthopedic surgery.
