Prolonged heavy rain in the North, warning of risk of flooding and flash floods

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, on June 29, the Northern region will continue to have moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms, and locally very heavy rain. Rainfall is generally from 70-140mm, some places may exceed 250mm. In particular, there is a warning of the risk of heavy rain of over 100mm in just 3 hours.

Last night (June 28), many areas in Northern Vietnam recorded heavy rain. Rainfall amounts from 7 PM on June 28 to 3 AM on June 29 reached 102mm in some locations such as Khanh Hoa ( Yen Bai ), 68.2mm in Muong Chieng (Hoa Binh), 62.2mm in Xuan Dai (Phu Tho), 58mm in Ha Lang (Tuyen Quang), 59mm in Xuan Thuong (Lao Cai), and 55mm in Yen Binh (Ha Giang).

In addition to the Northern region, on the evening and night of June 29th, areas from Thanh Hoa and Nghe An to the Central Highlands and the Southern region are likely to experience scattered showers and thunderstorms, with localized heavy rain, with rainfall amounts ranging from 10–30mm, and in some places exceeding 50mm.

From early morning on July 1st to early morning on July 2nd, another period of heavy rain will continue to affect Northern Vietnam, with rainfall generally ranging from 30–70mm, and exceeding 150mm in some areas. Widespread heavy rain in Northern Vietnam is forecast to continue until around July 2nd, with total rainfall for the entire period generally ranging from 100–300mm, and exceeding 500mm in some areas.

During thunderstorms, people need to be wary of dangerous weather phenomena such as tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong gusts of wind. The natural disaster risk level warning due to heavy rain is assessed at level 1.

There is a risk of flooding in low-lying areas, urban areas, and industrial zones; a high risk of flash floods on small rivers and streams, and landslides in hilly and mountainous areas.

Weather forecast for areas across the country:

Hanoi, the capital city, will be cloudy with occasional showers and thunderstorms, and locally heavy rain. Southeasterly winds will be at level 2-3. There is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, and strong gusts of wind during thunderstorms. The lowest temperature will be 25-27°C, and the highest temperature will be 29-31°C.

The northwestern region will be cloudy with moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms, with very heavy rain in some areas. Light winds. During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong gusts of wind. The lowest temperature will be 23-26°C, with some areas below 23°C. The highest temperature will be 29-32°C.

The northeastern provinces will be cloudy with moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms, with very heavy rain in some areas. Southeast winds will be at level 2-3. During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong gusts of wind. The lowest temperature will be 24-27 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature will be 29-32 degrees Celsius.

Provinces from Thanh Hoa to Hue will be cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms in some areas; Thanh Hoa and Nghe An will experience scattered showers and thunderstorms, with locally heavy rain. Light winds. There is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, and strong gusts of wind during thunderstorms. Lowest temperature 25-28°C. Highest temperature 32-35°C.

The area from Da Nang to Binh Thuan will be cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms in some places. Southwesterly winds will be at level 2-3. During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, and strong gusts of wind. The lowest temperature will be 25-28 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature will be 31-34 degrees Celsius, with some areas exceeding 34 degrees Celsius.

The Central Highlands provinces will be cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms in some areas; particularly in the late afternoon and evening, there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms, with locally heavy rain. Light winds. During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, and strong gusts of wind. The lowest temperature will be 20-23 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature will be 27-30 degrees Celsius.

Southern Vietnam will be cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms in some areas; particularly in the late afternoon and evening, there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms, with locally heavy rain. Light winds. During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, and strong gusts of wind. The lowest temperature will be 24-27°C. The highest temperature will be 30-33°C.
