According to the latest figures released by the Australian Federal Police (AFP), authorities in the country received 382 reports related to modern slavery and human trafficking, an increase of 12.35% compared to the previous fiscal year. These included 109 reports on human trafficking, 91 reports on forced marriage, and 69 reports on forced labor.
Helen Schneider, commander of the AFP's Anti-Exploitation Unit, asserted that these statistics are not simply numbers but a serious problem, as many innocent people become victims of human trafficking.
According to him, raising awareness of the law in Australia and supporting victims will help achieve progress in efforts to eradicate this crime.
The report was released on July 30th, coinciding with the United Nations' World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. This year's theme focuses on the effort to ensure "No child is left behind in the fight against trafficking in persons."
United Nations data shows that one-third of the victims of human trafficking globally are children, with the majority being girls.
