No need for tuition support for medical students

Regarding the opinion of adding medical doctor training subjects of public training institutions to the group of subjects guaranteed by the state budget and supported with tuition fees during the training period; Along with that is the commitment to work according to the State's assignment after graduation, Delegate Pham Van Hoa said that this proposal is not appropriate. Should tuition be exempted for resident doctors but not for medical students?

"Residents work without pay or some hospitals have a policy of providing a small amount of support. At the same time, residents need to pay for living expenses such as food, travel, and family expenses. They also have to pay extra for the residency system. But I think the number nationwide is not much, unlike the large number of medical students. If there is enough finance, tuition fees should be reduced for residents," Delegate Pham Van Hoa proposed.

In addition, according to Delegate Pham Van Hoa, most medical students admitted to prestigious medical universities in the city and the country come from well-off families. "Therefore, I think it is reasonable for these well-off families to contribute to the state budget to pay for students' tuition fees. However, for individual cases, medical students with difficult circumstances, from poor households, it is completely possible to exempt them from tuition fees. This is to create conditions for children of poor families but good students to be able to pass the entrance exam to medical school."

Cannot train doctors with low entry scores

Regarding the medical industry benchmark roadmap, Delegate Pham Van Hoa expressed: "Doctors are special people, as Uncle Ho advised: "A good doctor is like a mother". When sick, patients cannot take care of themselves so they seek doctors for support, advice and treatment. Their chances of survival and recovery depend largely on the doctor's qualifications and professional decisions. Therefore, society requires this team to not only be good at their job but also have a heart and vision".

Delegate Pham Van Hoa suggested that the entrance score for medical students should be set at a high level to ensure the quality of medical human resources. This shows that only students who are really good at studying can be admitted to the medical field. Candidates who do not meet the standards will choose other suitable fields or schools. Therefore, I completely agree with the Government's policy and suggest that it is necessary to stipulate that the entrance score of medical schools must be higher than the average of other universities.

Medical faculties of multidisciplinary universities also need to apply the same standard scores as specialized medical universities, ensuring the same entrance standards for the same specific profession. In fact, the current admission scores of many medical faculties at multidisciplinary universities are quite low, causing concerns about the quality of input and the quality of medical human resources in the future, the Delegate stated.

Delegate Pham Van Hoa said that if the entrance score is too low, it is difficult to expect to train good doctors. This is not a stereotype, but a reality: students with low scores in high school are hardly considered good and to achieve a good level is a great effort. "I think that to become a doctor, the first condition is to study well. Study well to have enough capacity to absorb a large, complex amount of knowledge and have the ability to perceive correctly in diagnosing and treating diseases for people."

At the same time, if the input is weak, the training process later will not be able to compensate. That means the risk to the patient will be higher. Although in any field there are good people and bad people, but in the medical industry, people always need good doctors. A weak doctor not only affects the treatment process but can also put the patient in unnecessary danger.

Delegate Hoa said that currently in some schools, there is a situation where specialized medical training and distance learning are being provided, but the minimum score is very low, even universities that train in many fields also have medical faculties. "I cannot accept this. If the principal and chairman of the school board make such a statement, I think it is necessary to review the qualifications of the principal and chairman of the school board. Why are there such statements? Do they want to recruit medical students with low scores to have a large number, in order to collect tuition fees? This is a shortcoming. Therefore, I suggest that multidisciplinary universities, including medical faculties, need to look back at themselves, review themselves and put the people first, with the people as the center. Therefore, we must recruit students effectively, not for the purpose of profit, not for the purpose of collecting tuition fees to cover expenses but mass recruitment, lacking quality", Delegate Pham Van Hoa emphasized.
