In early October 2023, many Netflix subscribers in Vietnam began receiving notifications about "upcoming changes to the service's membership status" via the email addresses they used to register for free accounts on the streaming platform. Accordingly, the free subscription policy for Android smartphone users would end on November 1, 2023.
After that date, current account holders will no longer be members of this service and will not be able to continue using it unless they upgrade to a paid plan, with a subscription fee starting from 70,000 VND/month. Users who wish to cancel their plan do not need to do anything; the company will automatically cancel their account membership when the free viewing program ends.
Netflix has discontinued its free plan; Vietnamese users now have the option to subscribe for prices starting from 70,000 VND per month.
The free subscription package, available since November 2021, is exclusively for users of Android smartphones. Vietnam is the second market in the world to take advantage of this offer, after Kenya. The free subscription comes with some limitations, such as access only to Netflix Originals and other restricted content, along with low resolution suitable only for phone screens. Users also cannot use this type of account on devices other than Android smartphones.
The free service has now stopped accepting new member registrations after two years of operation. This change is believed to be part of a plan to increase revenue and the number of subscribers on the platform.
Starting in July 2023, Netflix began tightening its account sharing policy in Vietnam. Many users of the service on TV were required to verify that they lived in the same household as the account holder in order to continue watching desired content. Shared accounts were identified through the IP address and device ID, as well as user activity. Therefore, if users did not share a household with the account holder, their profiles would continuously receive verification notifications each time they wanted to watch a movie.
The earlier tightening of regulations has yielded significant results on a global scale. Netflix's July financial report showed that the second quarter of 2023 saw an additional 5.9 million new accounts join the platform, with the US and Canada markets experiencing the most growth since 2021.
