The Ig Nobel Prize is a fun science award, given by an American scientific journal since 1991 as a parody of Sweden's prestigious Nobel Prize. The Ig Nobel Prize is awarded for scientific work that makes people laugh first and then think. Scientists have 24 seconds to present their work, then summarize it in seven words in the most easily understandable way.

At the awards ceremony on September 12th at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a team of Japanese and American scientists were awarded the Ig Nobel Prize in Physiology for their research showing that mammals can breathe through their anus. According to NHK, this is the 18th consecutive year that Japanese scientists have been awarded the Ig Nobel Prize.
One of the researchers is Professor Takebe Takanori (37 years old) from Tokyo Medical and Dental University and Osaka University.
The research team tested the animals on mice and pigs experiencing respiratory distress. They reported that the oxygen levels in the animals' bloodstream increased rapidly after they injected an oxygen-rich solution rectally through the anus. The pigs' respiratory distress improved under several specific conditions.
The Ig Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the late American psychologist BF Skinner. He experimented with the feasibility of using pigeons inside missiles for guidance and target identification.
A group of European researchers won a prize in probability. According to their study, "by hypothesis and through 350,757 coin tossing experiments," the sides of a coin are the same when tossed and when it lands still on the ground.
The Ig Nobel Prize in Biology honors the 1940 research on factors affecting milk production in dairy cows. The two authors, Fordyce Ely and William Petersen, placed a cat on the back of a dairy cow and repeatedly smashed a paper bag to see if the amount of milk produced changed. The results showed that the frightened cow appeared to produce less milk.
