Vietnam's women's sepak takraw made a splash at the 38th Sepak Takraw World Championship, which took place from July 22 to 27 in Songkhla (Thailand), gathering many strong teams in the region and the world . Vietnam's sepak takraw sent a strong force to participate in the tournament, reaching three finals but failed in the two categories of the 3-person women's team and the 4-person men's team.
Vietnam team lost the first game
Successful comeback
All hopes are pinned on the final match of the women's 4-a-side event, where Tran Thi Ngoc Yen and her teammates will have to face host Thailand on the field and thousands of spectators will fill the stands at the Central Hatyai Gymnasium. Thailand is really eager to pay back the "debt" of defeat in the Sepak Takraw World Cup final in March 2025 as well as the loss in the final of the 2022 World Championship, both against the Vietnamese team.
After losing 12-15 in the first set, the Vietnamese girls rose up strongly to win both sets with scores of 15-8 and 15-7, completing a strong and impressive comeback right in the "soccer holy land" of Thailand.
The final match exploded in the last two games with the victory of the Vietnamese team.
This is the third time that Vietnamese women's sepak takraw has won the world championship in the 4-a-side event, in addition to defeating Thailand twice in 2022 and 2025, and the victory over Indonesia in the final match in 2023.
Last year, the Vietnamese women's team lost to Thailand in the final.
After losing quite narrowly in the first half, the bravery of the Vietnamese players along with the reasonable tactical adjustments of coach Tran Thi Vui brought about unexpected success. On the home team side, after being tied 1-1, the players' mentality somewhat declined, leading to continuous mistakes in the first step and attack.
The final failed serve cost Thailand the championship.
Regret men's team
In the men's 4-man final, the Vietnamese team continued to miss the title when they lost to Japan 0-2 (7-15, 10-15) in the final match held on the morning of July 27. This is the fourth consecutive time the Vietnamese men's team has lost in the world final, after defeats against Korea (2022) and Thailand (2023, 2024).
Vietnam won the world championship for the third time
The 38th Sepak Takraw World Championship took place from July 22 to 27, with 6 competitions including 2-man, 3-man, 4-man, shuttlecock, team and mixed. Vietnam won a total of 1 gold medal, 2 silver medals and 2 bronze medals.
Sepak takraw is also an official event at the Asian Games (ASIAD) and at the 33rd SEA Games later this year, host Thailand is a strong candidate in all events.
