On November 2, specialist doctor Diep Trong Khai (Head of the Department of Neurology, Xuyen A General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City) said that after receiving patient C., the stroke emergency procedure was promptly initiated, the stroke and intervention team conducted a consultation and assessed the patient's condition.
After performing a brain CT scan, doctors determined that this was a case of cerebral infarction (stroke caused by lack of blood supply to the brain) in the second hour, still within the golden time to use thrombolytic drugs to help dissolve the blood clot causing the blockage of the cerebral blood vessels.
With the consent of the family, patient C. was injected with a thrombolytic drug. After that, the patient had another CT scan of the blood vessels, the results showed that the patient's blood vessels were quite good, with no evidence of severe stenosis or blockage of large blood vessels.
Just 1 hour after injecting thrombolytic drugs, the patient responded well and showed signs of recovery, with improved muscle strength in his arms and legs and was able to speak more clearly.
Patients are admitted to the hospital early, during the golden period of stroke treatment, so they recover quickly after injection of thrombolytic drugs.
Recognizing early signs of stroke can save lives
Through this case, Dr. Khai noted that recognizing the early signs of stroke plays an important role in saving the patient's life and restoring function later. For the elderly and those with chronic diseases, especially high blood pressure, any complications can become serious if the doctor's treatment regimen is not strictly followed.
"Long-term high blood pressure damages blood vessels, promotes the progression of atherosclerosis and is the leading cause of stroke. Therefore, to control high blood pressure well, maintaining the habit of limiting salty foods, canned foods and focusing on a healthy lifestyle and diet... is extremely necessary," Dr. Khai recommends.
Signs of stroke according to the FAST rule
According to Dr. Trong Khai, observing signs according to the FAST rule help identify stroke symptoms quickly.
1. F (Face - Face)
One side of the face becomes droopy or the eye droops. When smiling, the patient's mouth may be crooked to one side, making the two sides of the face asymmetrical.
2. A (Arms - Arms)
One or both arms cannot be raised above the head, raised straight, or can be raised but fall back down immediately.
3. S (Speech - Speech)
Slurred speech, difficulty understanding words, or the inability to pronounce a word clearly or complete a sentence are signs of a stroke. In addition, having difficulty finding words to describe your thoughts or being unable to speak coherently are also signs of a stroke.
4. T (Time - Time)
If you notice any of the above symptoms, or all of the FAST signs of a stroke, you need to call an ambulance or take the patient to the hospital immediately. Time is of the essence in stroke treatment. The quicker the patient is treated, the higher the chance of recovery, minimizing all complications caused by brain damage during a stroke.
