On the morning of January 31st (the 3rd day of the Lunar New Year of the Snake), Captain Hoang Ngoc Minh - head of the Vinh Thai commune police (Vinh Linh district, Quang Tri province) - shared that the total amount of "lucky money" the commune police received from benefactors for the woman who lost her money on New Year's Eve had reached 150 million VND.
Thousands of New Year's Eve lucky money messages.
Previously, on the afternoon of January 27, Ms. Le Thanh Thuy (42 years old, resident of Tan Mach village) found 1.5 million VND and brought it to Vinh Thai commune police to hand over.
The money was wrapped in a piece of student notebook paper torn at the corner, along with two scribbled notes about shopping for Tet (Lunar New Year), which included: "bananas + betel nuts and leaves, vegetables + 10kg of sticky rice".
On the night of January 27th, the Vinh Thai commune police went to Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa's house, confirmed that she was the person who had lost the items, and returned them.
The local police also posted a short video about Ms. Hoa, sharing her simple, down-to-earth story and her house on social media. On New Year's Eve, thousands of messages and calls poured into the phone number of the local police chief, Hoang Ngoc Minh, expressing sympathy for Ms. Hoa.
"Some people donated a little, some a lot, from 50,000 VND to 500,000 VND. On New Year's Eve, I received 90 million VND. I announced that I would stop accepting donations, but the account still showed the amount, and benefactors transferred up to 150 million VND to my account."
"I myself was very surprised by the strong and widespread impact of the community. Through this, the image of the police force has been spread, which makes me very happy," Captain Minh shared.
Mr. Minh said that receiving this large amount of financial support was a surprise to the local community and his family.
"The local authorities handed over 5 million VND for them to celebrate Tet. I'm waiting for the bank to reopen on the 6th to release the statement. After that, together with the local authorities, the police from Vinh Linh district and Quang Tri province will come to meet Ms. Hoa."
"The benefactors want them to have a more stable life. I plan to rebuild a new house for Mrs. Hoa. With the remaining money, we will find a way for them to have a monthly savings," Captain Minh confided.

The happiest Lunar New Year for a woman who lost money.
Meanwhile, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa (55 years old, residing in Tan Mach village, Vinh Thai commune) shared: "This is the happiest Tet holiday of my life. I lost money and the police returned it to me, and now I've received even more money. Now my grandmother and I are less worried and distressed. I thank everyone very much," Ms. Hoa expressed.
For many years, Mrs. Hoa lived with her elderly aunt in an old, dilapidated, and cramped charity house. Her daughter had married and lived far away.
"I have four plots of barren sandy land, I don't know the exact area. Every year I grow potatoes, beans, and peanuts. When the harvest is good, I earn 1-2 million dong, but when the harvest fails, I lose everything. I also raise three cows and calves, and I work as a hired hand at sea, doing whatever anyone asks me to do," Mrs. Hoa honestly recounted.
Every month, she and her aunt receive a social welfare allowance of 1.75 million VND.
The joy of the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Snake came to Mrs. Hoa unexpectedly and greatly. She herself couldn't have imagined how large the sum of money was. Mrs. Hoa is described as honest, reserved, and possessing the simple, down-to-earth nature of people from the central coastal region.
