With his solution "Making a jig to fix the edge of the steel strip when unwinding the output coil on the S1 large slitting machine," Mr. Trinh Van Tuyen, Head of the S1 large slitting line, JFE Shoji Hai Phong Steel Co., Ltd. (VSIP Industrial Park), was awarded the Creative Labor Certificate in 2024 by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor .
According to Mr. Tuyen, previously, during the cutting of narrow-width steel coils, the steel strip of the coil group frequently got caught in the output shaft, leading to the coil unraveling and getting stuck in the output shaft of the slitting machine.
The reason is that soft felt is used to cushion the coiled bundles, but the felt is not rigid enough to hold the ends of the steel strips when the trolley moves out. This limitation results in wasted time and compromised safety during handling.
Based on that situation, he spent time observing and analyzing the causes. According to him, the biggest weakness was the ineffective use of felt to hold the coils together because the felt was soft, and when moving, the weight of the coils caused the ends of the steel strips to easily get stuck. During production, workers spent a considerable amount of effort fixing this problem.
The rigid steel strips are difficult to bend, and each time they become loose, it takes time to push them back into their original position, affecting the overall progress of the production line. Therefore, he proposed creating a lightweight, easily removable semi-circular steel fixture to hold the ends of the steel strips in place. As the coils move, this device prevents the steel edges from becoming loose or jammed on the shaft, ensuring safety and reducing troubleshooting time.
After only a short period of implementation, the semi-circular steel jig has proven remarkably effective. The solution saves operation time, eliminates coil unraveling when moving coil groups, reduces operation and processing time by 5 minutes per production order, and saves 14 hours per month.
The solution, implemented since January 2024 on both S1 and S3 production lines, has resulted in a profit of 840 million VND per year, notably without incurring additional costs as it utilizes materials readily available in the factory. Dang Van Hiep, Chairman of the Trade Union of JFE Shoji Hai Phong Steel Co., Ltd., commented that Mr. Tuyen's solution is simple yet highly effective. What is particularly valuable is that the initiative stems from practical experience and careful observation during the work process, not only saving costs but also ensuring the safety of the operators.
Having graduated from Central Transport College No. 2 with an intermediate vocational certificate in welding, and with a thirst for knowledge, Mr. Trinh Van Tuyen has always been active in improving techniques.
Although this was the first time he received the Creative Labor Award from the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, during his seven years working at the company, Mr. Tuyen consistently proposed many initiatives and improvements in the production process alongside the workers. For many years in a row, he was evaluated by the company as having excellently completed his duties and was a model union member in the creative labor emulation movement.
Sharing his motivation for research, Mr. Tuyen expressed that every improvement, however small, that helps workers operate machinery more conveniently and safely is something worth doing. Therefore, in his work, he always observes carefully, identifies limitations, and then works with colleagues to find ways to overcome them.
Furthermore, the company always creates favorable conditions by providing complete facilities and encouraging employee creativity through a clear and transparent policy of rewarding innovative ideas and evaluating performance. This is the "lever" that allows each worker to confidently propose new ideas. "In the context of a volatile economy , helping businesses reduce costs and increase productivity is extremely important. This also contributes to ensuring jobs and income for the workers themselves," Mr. Tuyen said.
