Many new mothers are being offered to buy formula milk.

Many mothers receive calls asking for advice on buying milk for their babies just a few hours after giving birth, or still maintain the habit of bringing formula milk to the hospital. This unintentionally creates psychological pressure, significantly affecting the breastfeeding of many mothers.

On October 21st, Duc Giang General Hospital (Hanoi) was officially recognized by the Ministry of Health as an "Excellent Breastfeeding Practice Hospital," becoming the first public hospital in Hanoi to achieve this title.

Speaking at the announcement, Dr. Vu Thi Thu Nga, Head of the Neonatal Department at Duc Giang General Hospital, said that the obstetrics department currently receives more than 3,000 births each year. To provide maximum support for mothers, the hospital has invested in a separate breastfeeding room, fully equipped with cups, spoons, sterilization equipment, and breast pumps.

"Thanks to the strict application of skin-to-skin contact for 90 minutes after birth, 95-96% of newborns are able to breastfeed early in the first hour. This not only helps mothers produce milk well and reduces postpartum hemorrhage, but also helps babies stabilize their body temperature, increase their immunity, and strengthen the mother-child bond," shared Dr. Nga.

According to doctors, the initial implementation of this model encountered many difficulties. Many mothers felt uncomfortable with prolonged skin-to-skin contact, or still maintained the habit of bringing formula milk to the hospital.

In particular, there have been calls offering advice on formula feeding just hours after birth. This has negatively impacted the psychology of mothers practicing breastfeeding.

The hospital had to contact the authorities to work to limit the number of phone calls offering formula milk. At the same time, they organized weekly prenatal classes to help pregnant women better understand the benefits of breastfeeding and guide mothers on proper breastfeeding techniques.

"Thanks to persistent guidance and support, most mothers now choose breastfeeding and the Kangaroo method as the best way to care for their babies in the first days," shared Dr. Nga.

After three years of implementation, Duc Giang General Hospital has fully met all 12 evaluation criteria of the Ministry of Health and has officially been recognized as an "Excellent Breastfeeding Practice Hospital".

Mr. Do Dinh Tung, Director of Duc Giang General Hospital, further shared that this is a very difficult title to achieve, a recognition of the persistent efforts, dedication, and love of the medical team for mothers and children.

"We will continue to implement and spread this model to other hospitals so that more children can benefit from breastfeeding," Mr. Tung affirmed.

At the program, Mr. Nguyen Van Chi, Deputy Director of the Department of Mothers and Children (Ministry of Health), emphasized that breastfeeding is the most important measure to enhance the survival and health of young children.

The Ministry of Health is promoting a model of excellent breastfeeding hospitals, aiming to help healthcare facilities properly implement guidelines on essential early newborn care and Kangaroo care, contributing to increasing the rate of exclusive breastfeeding for infants in the first six months of life.

Mr. Vu Cao Cuong, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Health, affirmed that achieving this title is not only a joy for the hospital but also a shared pride of the capital's health sector in its efforts to care for the health of mothers and children.

He stated that the Hanoi Department of Health will continue to support and direct other medical facilities in the area to replicate this model, contributing to improving the quality of maternal healthcare.
