Many universities tighten transcripts, abolish old combinations, students suffer because of disrupted pathways

Many universities tighten their review of transcripts and abandon traditional combinations, forcing candidates to quickly "turn around" and study new subjects to change their block, disrupting their three-year roadmap.

In Hanoi, the School of Interdisciplinary Sciences and Arts (VNU-SIS), Hanoi National University, announced that it will completely eliminate the use of transcripts for all training majors. Candidates wishing to enter the school must participate in one of the admission methods according to the new regulations. The University of Technology (VNU-UET) and Hanoi Pedagogical University 2 also announced that they will not use transcripts in any method, only keeping them for some specific majors.

This trend has spread to schools in the South. Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry plans to stop considering transcripts, high school graduation exam scores and even the ability assessment test scores - methods that have attracted a large number of candidates in recent years. Not only changing the method, many schools have also strongly adjusted the admission combinations. The Political Officer School eliminated the two traditional combinations A00 (Math, Physics, Chemistry) and C00 (Literature, History, Geography), and added C01 (Literature, Math, Physics). The Border Guard Academy also eliminated C00 and A01, only keeping C03, C04, D01 for both Border Guard and Law majors.

These sudden adjustments not only affect grade 12 students who are preparing for the exam, but also have a big impact on students of classes 2027 and 2028 - those who have "framed" the combination since grades 10 and 11. Therefore, right after the information was announced, many parents expressed concern.

Ms. Dinh Thanh, a parent of a 12th grade student in Hanoi , shared: “Any change at the time when students are “in the groove” of preparing for the graduation exam can easily confuse them. Right from grade 10, students have to choose a combination according to their orientation. They have studied for 3 years, now that the exam is near, how can they change in time to respond? Once there is a change, the roadmap must be at least 3 years for the students to meet the requirements of the university.”

Sharing the same concern, Ms. Thu Thuy said that her child's learning process was affected by the constant changes: " As soon as they entered grade 10, they had to choose a combination, many subjects were completely abandoned. When the graduation exam was near, the combination was announced to be removed, parents were really sitting on hot coals ." Many parents said that removing traditional combinations right when grade 12 students had almost completed the three-year path caused a lot of disruption and affected their chances of getting into university.

Meanwhile, many students said they are struggling to keep their study plans from being disrupted. The fact that many universities have simultaneously eliminated traditional combinations such as C00 and A00 has left many candidates unable to react.

Tuan Anh, a student in Hanoi, said he was quite confused when the military schools he had pursued since grade 10 stopped considering the C00 combination in the upcoming admissions season. In order not to miss the opportunity, the male student had to supplement Math, switching to block C03 (Math, Literature, History) or C04 (Math, Literature, Geography). If he had only studied at school before, Tuan Anh now had to take extra classes two sessions a week.

Need a roadmap to ensure students' rights

From the perspective of teachers, many people consider the tightening of the review of transcripts as a reasonable trend, but the problem lies in the timing and implementation. Ms. Nguyen Thu Huong, a high school teacher in Nghe An, analyzed: "The transcript scores between schools and localities are not equal. In some places, the actual scores are not equal, in some places, the scores are pushed up too high. This can easily lead to pragmatic learning, finding ways to 'beautify' the transcripts."

Ms. Huong believes that eliminating the consideration of academic records is something schools can do, but the change must ensure consistency and stability. “Students have chosen their combination since the beginning of 10th grade. If we remove A00 or C00 now and announce it too soon, students will react because they won’t have time to change direction. Changing the combination must have a roadmap of at least 3 years.”

The principal of a high school in Ho Chi Minh City is also concerned that if universities stop considering transcripts immediately, students may study more lopsidedly. They will focus on the three subjects for admission, and only study the other subjects for show. This goes against the goal of comprehensive education. According to this principal, transcripts are not only a method of admission but also reflect the training process of students in three years of high school.

Many teachers and parents agree that any significant changes should be announced early, preferably in August right after the previous year’s admissions period, so that students have enough time to prepare. In the long term, a stable roadmap of at least 3 years should be established for any changes in the combination and selection methods.

Experts also agree that exam reform is necessary, but there must be a two- to three-year roadmap to ensure stability. Sudden changes can easily make schools and students passive, increase psychological pressure and reduce review effectiveness. Therefore, any adjustments to the high school graduation exam need to be announced early, have a transition period and be accompanied by specific instructions to minimize the impact on students.

Dr. Nguyen Tung Lam, Chairman of the Education Council of Dinh Tien Hoang High School (Hanoi) added: "Early announcement is important, but it should not be too rigid. Society and science change rapidly, if we are forced to wait three years to adjust, universities will find it difficult to adapt. The most important thing is to create initiative for students, and at the same time require them not to study lopsidedly, not just chasing a few subjects in the admission combination but forgetting other fundamental subjects" .

According to Dr. Nguyen Tung Lam, current tests are all oriented towards interdisciplinary thinking, so maintaining comprehensive learning is the foundation for students to meet the requirements of modern society and adapt well to all innovations in enrollment.

Master Pham Thai Son, Director of the Admissions and Communications Center, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, recommends that candidates proactively review to expand their admission combinations; for example, students following C00 can improve their English or Economics and Law Education, and at the same time learn more about schools with suitable majors as backup. He emphasized that candidates need to closely monitor admission information, expand their options, and focus on studying well to increase their chances of being admitted.

What students and parents want most is stability. When changes are announced early enough and have a clear roadmap, students will feel less pressured and teachers will feel more confident in their guidance. A consistent and transparent admissions process will always start with putting the interests of students first.
