The Easy-Comm platform, which supports communication for the hearing impaired, developed by a group of students from Hanoi Open University, won the prize at the “Youth Digital Innovation Challenge”.

The project applies artificial intelligence (AI) and Deep Learning to recognize sign language, convert it into text, speech and vice versa. The two-way communication feature helps deaf people interact independently, without the need for an interpreter, contributing to eliminating communication barriers.

Easy-Comm is the brainchild of three students: Ngo Duy Dong, Dang Van Sam and Le Dinh Hieu. The team has worked with organizations that support the deaf to ensure the software accurately reflects real-world usage.

In addition to domestic effectiveness, the team also aims to expand the application in the Philippines - where there is a high rate of hearing-impaired people.

According to WHO, there are currently about 1.5 billion people with hearing loss worldwide, of which 430 million have severe hearing loss. In Vietnam alone, there are about 2.5 million people with hearing loss.

The contest is part of the program “Digital Capacity Building for Youth – Skill Our Future”, jointly organized by UNDP, the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and VOV Newspaper.

After nearly two months of implementation, the competition attracted more than 100 projects from students and disadvantaged groups, focusing on digital solutions in education, healthcare, agriculture and AI assistants.
