To earn extra money for school fees and books, during Tet, students in coastal areas cycle to the beach to sell banh loc to tourists. Their Tet is closely linked to their livelihood at sea.
On February 14 (the 5th day of Tet), quite a lot of visitors came to Vinh Hien beach (Vinh Hien commune, Phu Loc district, Thua Thien Hue province) to visit and swim.
Visitors arrive at the beach at 9am. People walk along the beach in droves. They happily watch the waves lapping at the shore.
There are couples holding hands walking on the romantic sandy beach, then taking souvenir photos together.
SGGP Online reporters were present at the beach and witnessed the bustling crowd of people having fun and swimming. In addition to visitors coming to enjoy the spring, we also witnessed many students making a living during Tet on the beach.
These students live by the sea, in Hien An 2 village (Vinh Hien commune). Every morning at 6am, their families wrap banh loc and then steam it. Around 9am, when tourists arrive at the beach, the students ride their bicycles to sell the banh loc boxes. Around 5pm, when tourists leave the beach, the students return home.
Tran Thi Thao Vy (Hien An 2 village, Vinh Hien commune) said she is a 6th grade student at a local school. This year, taking advantage of the Tet holiday, she goes to the beach to sell banh loc in the morning and returns home in the afternoon. On peak days, she sells 200,000 VND, and on low days, she sells 100,000 VND.
“This year, I went to the beach to sell cakes from the 2nd to the 5th day of Tet, then went back to school. I gave the money from selling cakes during Tet to my mother to pay for tuition and buy school supplies,” Vy said.
Dao Thi Lai (Hien An 2 village, Vinh Hien commune) is currently in 9th grade. From the 2nd to the 5th day of Tet, Lai cycles 3km from her home to the beach to sell cakes.
Lai said: “I make this cake at home, and I sell it. I earn 100,000 VND a day. On sunny days, customers buy more. To make it easier to sell the cake, I bring lunch with me. This money will be used to pay for my studies.”
After walking and swimming, tourists are “recharged” by hot banh loc. As for the children, thanks to the bags of banh loc sold to customers during Tet, they have contributed to helping them have more money to pay for their studies.
